Pacifica Radio cutbacks

Looking through all the Pacifica stations it seems all of them have been forced to scale back operations somewhat. KPFT no longer carries any local news programs and KPFA and KPFK had to merge operations. I blame it on in-fighting in the Pacifica organization, too many radicals, and Amy Goodman driving her listeners and viewers to death by boredom.

I certainly agree with you about Amy Goodman. Her show does cover many important topics ignored by other media, but the presentation is so poor that it drives away many listeners.

I happened to hear Goodman give a live speech last summer at the Solarfest in Vermont, and it was an excellent, captivating speech. Now, if she could just do the same on her radio show!

Pacifica is like a big club--with hundreds/thousands of members and dozens of smaller factions with lots of passion for specific issues but little interest in the big picture--where everybody gets a vote... there are too many directors with significant influence... and the designated leader has the responsibility for success but not the authority to achieve it.

Even those of us who love the ideal Pacifica represents recognize the difficulty that these folks have operating with this kind of internal structure. After 60 years of painting themselves into a corner, it's hard to see how anything will change anytime soon.

As for Amy, hey, lighten up. If you want beauty queens (vocally or visually), that's what Fox News is for! Besides, Goodman left Pacifica years ago--their stations (or most of them, anyway) just carry her show now.
