Packers Vs. Saints - Vs. Obama

A Presidental address originally scheduled for Wednesday, September 7, has been moved to the following night, September 8 - which just so happens to be the kickoff night for the 2011 NFL season.

I wonder if this would be the case had the Bears been in that season-opening game.

This wouldn't be the first time the President had a conflict with a televised sporting event; who can forget when MLB decided to move down the start time of a World Series game so that Fox can carry an "Obama 2008" infomercial?

Everybody knows who wins the opening game is much more vital to the nation's interest,
economy and vitality than anything a president might have to say.

Just makes it easier to see how we got to this position in the first place.

This thread had better grab it's hat and coat.....something tells me it will be escourted outside any time now!! :D

A cynic might say this is exactly what the Repubs wanted. They were laughing when they moved him to Thursday.

Wouldn't have mattered either way. If people waited for these two plus years and still don't have anything one night sooner or later would not have mattered to get nothing new but SSDD and face time while wasting air space. Raising a billion dollars (that's $1,000,000,000.00) to run a campaign is just as arrogant in assuming you too stupid to notice that you are getting mere lipservice while being played for fools.

As for "Repubs" getting what they wanted, they are not on much more solid footing given their own lack of common sense in their campaign. Do you ever wonder how many more are going to step into the fray and waste air space?

Watch the football game and see something new.

Yesterday, I heard that the President is going to try and end the speech before the football game actually begins. So I guess you're looking at an address to the joint session of Congress starting at around 7 PM ET? That must be the earliest start time for an evening Presidential address ever.

Nope...in the 1950s and 60s there were lots of presidential addresses in daytime or early evening. The annual State Of The Union speech did not become a Prime Time event until 1965.

Amazingly enough 1965 was right about the time the News Election Service, now known as the Voter News Service, kicked off, having been created in 1964 by LBJ. We rarely hear the terms "News Election Service" or "Voter News Service". We usually hear their usual name, "The Associated Press".

Indeed, if you see the label "Voter News Service" used in reference to the Associated Press, the labeler is wrong.

AP was a contractor to the VNS - AP member newspapers and broadcasters would relay local election results to a central office (often in the state capital). AP would share that information with VNS post haste so that VNS could distribute it to its clients - the major media conglomerates.

VNS no longer exists.

Thanks for the info... Incidentally, it was not until about ten years ago or so that the "NFL Kickoff" became a prime time event. Go figure... ::)

The Saints-Packers game was exciting and compelling.
Nobody has yet told me the same about Obama's speech.

The underlying tension in Congress was as compelling as the final play in the Saints-Packers game. The wide shot showing half of the room applauding, while the other half looked angry spoke volumes. At one point, the camera focused on McConnell, and he had no expression at all on his face. If the two sides could have tackled each other, it might have relieved the tension. But clearly they don't like each other, and I don't expect Republicans to do anything that will help the unemployed, because it would help Obama. This is high stakes poker, where the people and the country are the losers. No wonder there's a lack of confidence.
