Paid Programming on WNBC-4 at 7:30 PM

I couldn't believe my eyes tonight when I put on Channel 4 and saw a half-hour infomercial airing from 7:30 to 8 pm. Whatever happened to their regular programming? Are times really that bad for the network and WNBC? I can't say I've ever seen any major network o&o carry infomercials at such a "prime" timeslot...sometimes early on a Sunday afternoon as filler programming between sports broadcasts, but certainly not at 7:30 on a weeknight.

WCBS did it a few times a few years ago preempting ET in prime access. They got blasted for it, and rightfully so. You'd think the GEniuses at NBC would have learned.

It looks like Access Hollywood is the show most often to be pre-empted by infomercials. They've been doing the same thing at least twice a week at 11:00 am, where the previous day's broadcast is scheduled.

At least reruns of the recently-cancelled (thank gosh), awful iVillage show will still air, albeit for the time being. When that gets pulled, don't be surprised if they program an hour of infomercials at Noon.

That idea was actually the brainchild of Mel Karmazin, who was at CBS at the time. I remember seeing his mug in a NY Post story with the headline, "CBS Infomercial Madness".

By the way, what was the content of the infomercial that ran on WNBC? Time-Life?

Yes, it was one of those real estate infomercials, produced to resemble a "news" report, complete with the scrolling "news ticker" at the bottom of the screen. I've seen Channel 31 air it during overnights.

We have those in Connecticut too. Usually tho they don't pre-empt regularly scheduled programming. Just this morning at 10:30AM one hosted by Donald Trump was on WCTX/59 and WTXX/20. (One's owned by LIN-TV, the other owned by Tribune). 10:30AM is a regular infomercial timeslot on both channels.

If you hand any station enough money, they will air anything in any timeslot.

It was an informercial from the fake MLN News (mortage lenders?)... They talked about Mortages, FHA loans, re-fi, etc..It was updated though, talking about Bush's economic stimulus plan.

It features some really obnoxious, thick Long Island/Brooklyn accented pale guy who looks like he burned off his eyebrows, selling his company's services as if they were a saving grace.

They pulled people off the street, made them read cue cards while pretending to be live via satellite from Boston, Chicago, etc.. (backdrops of city skylines are lovely props).

A true disappointment to WNBC. I would expect to see this on Pax/iON tv or a cable channel late nights/early Sunday mornings. In fact, I have seen this infomercial before... on iON tv.

Quite sad. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if this Lender America or whoever, sees a spike in business. Primetime, major market, mortgage/housing crisis
