Palm Springs/Coachella Valley loses its ONLY alternative station

M 99.5 has hopped on the bandwagon of playing Classic Rock. It calls itself 99.5 The Heat. The old M 99-5 website can direct you to the new page.

<sigh> I wish there was a balance of formats in this valley.

I am pleased with this. It will at the very least cut Classic Rock 106.9's numbers in half and maybe beat them as the new web site claims no wimpy songs like The Eagle plays during the day; stuff like "I saw the light" by Todd Rungren and "Guitar Man" by Bread. Personally I wish KDES would step it up, drop the 60's and stick with the late 70's and 80's.

True. But with so few frequencies in the desert, why duplicate an already existing station? Especially when there's many other formats missing.

It will be very strange to see what happens during the next Coachella Fest!? So now there are 3 rockers in Palm Springs? Can 99.5 really unseat KCLB?
Jonny Bruce!! Great to see you on here - Hows Groove!? That Bastard doesn't return my calls.

Lamey

Now i got nothing to listen to on terrestrial radio on the 10 between phoenix and la. The 80s station gone now 99.5 alternative gone  I am :(

I'm not defending anyone... but I work full time for a living and I happen to really like Alternative Rock. I'm not a fan of Classic Rock though. I don't think it's fair to assume every young person is inhereting a trust fund and is lazy.

I think its strange that Dan and Tom went after KCLB and Eagle with this format? Why not KPLM, a classic country? hotter country? Lets see how 99.5 does now going up against a Heritage Rocker in the Valley..btw: whatever happened to Gene who used to own the Rock?

This has to go down as the lamest move in recent memeory in Palm Springs.

There isn't just one classic rock with Eagle... KCLB still plays a ton of classic rock and will probably alter their programming to further drive the stake into the heart of KMRJ.

If you thought the days were dark at KMRJ wait until this format fails....

:) I very much agree.

But try explaining that to some of the other people on this board who apparently only listen to one or two formats and want it all over their dial...

Now that the ratings for "The Heat" are just as bad as the old format...what will they do now?

The owners of the station, a father and son team, have taken a bath in Arb Books in the past. I was in talks with Dan who owns the station and I think they made a bad decision to go the route they went to. it was sold to them by someone who talked a bit faster than me. There is no talent needed to pull of programming a classic rocker. It is like owning a jukebox. It does however bode well with advertisers. What they lacked all along was a decent PD to pull off an Alt Rocker format. I cut my teeth in Radio at KROQ in the 80s and if I had made the move this thread would not exist. Their station went from a 4 to a 1 in one book, and bottom line they got scared. programming is a dieing art form but still can be achieved. Just look at what I have done in the past creating cabo Wabo Radio and now another format which I am currently streaming and broadcasting until my talk format launches. More as it all develops...
