Palm Springs FM radio

It looks like Palm Springs will lose a Dance outlet, as Audacy spins off KQPS to KGAY owner Brad Fuhr, who plans to flip the format on March 8, 2023.
It'll be interesting to see what the format is - perhaps a rare example of an LGBTQ+ station playing something other than dance music? Of course, it may not be an LGBTQ+ station at all.

I'm gay, I like dance music, but I tend not to listen to LGBTQ+ radio because the presentation is often of the patronizing, camp "dance around your handbags!" ilk. Plenty of dance music stations out there that don't patronize the audience.

KQPS is going to be 103.1 MeTV FM.

Domain was regiesterd a few days before the announcement of the purchase.

Guess he didn’t want to cannibalize KGAY and its gold-based Dance format, but the move would make sense.

With the Coachella Valley so heavily populated with seniors, this is a local owner serving the "other" unserved market segment.

The real question: What was the sales price?

Unlike some valley stations, 103.1 actually has good coverage for a Class A.

More information

"Brad Fuhr, the owner of KGAY 106.5, has purchased KQPS 101.3 FM, which has been known as Channel Q.... Fuhr would not reveal the format in advance, but alluded to his love of memorable music from decades past as a hint. While programming will not be LGBTQ-specific, Fuhr believes that it will strike a chord with all audiences.”

"Under the KGAY PSP Corp. umbrella, the new entity will be organized as a California public benefit corporation or “B” Corp. Such companies put purpose over profit.

“I’ve wanted for some time to expand and diversify the reach of our current properties to benefit listeners and advertisers,” Fuhr said. “The deal with Audacy is a win, win, win for local media and for consumers.""

$600,000

"4.2 Purchase Price. In consideration for the sale of the Station Assets, Buyer
shall, at the Closing, in addition to assuming the Assumed Obligations, pay to Audacy Six Hundred
Thousand Dollars ($600,000) (the “Purchase Price”), subject to adjustment as provided in Article
3 hereof. Such payment shall be made by wire transfer of immediately available funds pursuant
to wire instructions that Audacy shall provide in writing to Buyer"

TBA is $2500 a month till deal closes.

I kicked the tires on this one when CBS sold it, and they first wanted $2.4 million, later offereing $1.8 million. I thought it was, perhaps, worth $800 thousand, and a buyer would have to pick up another 2 to 3 stations to be competitive.

Prior to being put up for sale, billing had fallen from over $1 million to around $300. At 2.5 times gross billing, I figured $800 was the value. It's a Class A, but given the size of the market and the antenna site, it does cover nearly all the market nicely.

Simulcast is in effect. They have messages welcoming 103.1 listeners to KGAY, have also mentioned 103.1 will change formats Wednesday.

It has been mentioned by on air personalities. They seem to have a some prerecorded bits as well.

Blocked here in Vermont. Must be some sort of regional geofencing rather than just the immediate area. But there are other MeTV FM stations that don't geofence, so nothing is being lost here for out-of-region other than legal IDs and whatever local ads the station can sell.

Press-release-driven article in the Palm Springs Patch

Too bad the audio stream is geofenced.
"Over the weekend, MeTVfm 103.1 will feature songs about “time” in a nod to Daylight Saving Time on Sunday.
The station will run commercial-free for the remainder of the week so listeners can sample MeTVfm 103.1 with the most music."

Ha.
