Pamal sells out in Gainesville

Oh crap. After the whole ridiculus "Randy Wright (WRONG)" Rock 104 fiasco, I hope the new owner doesn't screw with the Buzz!

MARC Broadcasting are the new owners. Pamal has some big money morning shows on signals that aren't so great. Kidd Kraddick, Lex & Terry, Smiley. These guys don't come cheap.....
Will be interesting to see what the new company does to each station.

This should be fun............ ;D

I doubt that MARC will mess with WHHZ since it is showing some growth now that ROCK104 is gone. Probably, Pamal couldn't have found a willing buyer without WHHZ doing something. They've been trying to sell the stations for years. The only jewels in the cluster are WTMG and WHHZ at this point. I hope the new owners have a well-considered plan because the group's FM stations all have significant, if not outright debilitating, coverage problems.

And who (or whom) we might ask is MARC Radio Group, LLC?

"Radio Station Group with Corporate Headquarters in Winter Park, FL. Acquiring 7 Radio stations in Florida with plans to acquire additional properties in the near term." (emphasis added)

Guess I better cut the kudzo off the towers and sweep out the studios in case he comes a callin'!

Portmann was a GM in Tampa, back in the day, so he may know what he's getting into, though that collection of rimshot FM sticks and AM dogs tends to look better than it really is.

It could be that with TMG's recent ratings success and the Buzz's gift-wrapped billing bump in the wake of RUF's quixotic (great word, eh?) Country foray, Pamal might have seen their chance to Get The Hell Out Of Gainesville!

What was the price tag?

MARC Radio. That company is led by Mike Schweitzer, Bob Longwell and Tom Hauff. Veteran operator Shawn Portmann will serve as president of what is for now MARC's only market.

I never understood what business plan led Pamal to buy the nine stations they did (two were sold).  They have spent a lot of money on buildings and equipment so I hope they can cover all that with the sale.  The stations sound good but with the exception of WTMG and The Buzz they haven't had much luck in the ratings.  I hope they treat Jim Brand with respect after forty years at WDVH.  (By the way, they are ID'ing as WDVH-AM Gainesville-Waldo????)

Yeah, heard that too Jeff.

What's the big deal? Just ID'ing another city the AM serves is all it sounds like to me. FM is the same too Trenton-Chiefland. Again, same deal.

Just odd. Stations usually include a larger city in the ID. I thought maybe they were alternating other towns but I've only heard Waldo.

My favorite was the old South 106 in Columbus, GA that went something like "South 106 WSTH Alexander City Columbus Phenix City Auburn Opelika Newnan LaGrange Montgomery The South!"

What stations were the other two?

Pamal Broadcasting, Ltd initially acquired nine stations in the Gainesville / Ocala MSA and TSA. The two stations Pamal previously sold are WRGO-FM 102.7 Cedar Key and WYNY(AM) (Now WZCC) 1240 Cross City, leaving Pamal with the remaining seven stations that were recently sold to Winter Park, Florida based MARC Radio Group, LLC.

When Pamal Broadcasting acquired its initial nine station group, the plan was to cover the entire MSA and TSA with WRZN-AM covering Ocala, Crystal River and the area South of Citrus County while WRGO-FM was intended to cover Crystal River and Chiefland while WDJY (now WDVH-FM) and WYNY-AM (now WZCC) were intended to cover Gilchrist, Levy and Dixie Counties with the remaining stations serving Gainesville.

When adults standards was replaced with Lite Rock on WKZY (Cozy 106.9), the “Cozy” format was originally planned to move to WRZN, WLUS (now WDVH 980) and WYNY to be called The Cozy Group, all programming adult standards with program origination coming from WRZN Hernando.

The concept with all nine stations was to provide the reach of newspaper to advertisers with the cost of radio making any ad buys cost effective to all advertisers. Each outlying station would market itself to its own local market with local advertisers while collectively as a group all nine stations would be offered to national ad agencies by delivering the entire MSA and TSA. No one else in the market was able to provde that kind of coverage with the exception of WKTK and WOGK.

The way you explain it, it makes perfect sense.  I wonder why it never worked out although the WRZN version of adult standards would never have worked it Gainesville—it was much too old.  The old Cozy 106.9 (was it ABC or Westwood adult standards version) had ratings in the 4's when they switched formats.  None of their stations, except WTMG, ever had those kind of ratings but I guess it was the wrong demo.

Besides Pensacola, does Pamal have any other markets in the south?

Savannah.

G

What station(s) does Pamal own in Savannah? I know Dick Pope, who acquired WRGO from Pamal, owns a station in Savannah; However, I am unaware of any Pamal owned Savannah stations. The only other Florida Pamal stations are WMEZ 94.1 Pensacola and WXBM 102.7 Milton.
