Panasonic CQ-CB8901U

Does anyone know if this Head Unit has Built in HD Radio, I always believed JVC made the only Built in head unit, but I guess not.

Does it have the Multicast feature, because many people have had the run ins with those stereos that do cannot tune into the subchannels..

Crutchfield Christmas catalog which just arrived featured NO - none - zip - nada - HD radios. The only reference at all to HD was in its available-gear comparison chart, where check-marks appeared on a handful of car stereos including the venerable low-line JVC "tuner."

Pages of prominent consumer audio offerings included Bluetooth, mp3 and iPod-interactive stereos. There was not one featured HD Radio device, either AM or FM. No text, no photos of any HD gear whatsoever.

Yeah we get it. HD's dead, DEAD I tell you. Did it (the catalog) mention headphones? They must be dead as well. Not every circular/catalog/mailing will mention every product. GEEZ!

I remember reading here not long ago something to the effect that "I got a Best Buy Circular in my paper today, and there was NOTHING about HD Radio. Nothing, Nada, Zip". The next week, an entire page was devoted to HD. I don't think this past week's Best Buy Circular mentioned headphones, or video capture devices, "tapeless" camcorders, or XM Boomboxes. My local Best Buy (Hickory, NC) still carries all of those items. HOW CAN IT BE? They actually sell items that aren't in their 5-8 page newspaper insert. Imagine...a store the size of a football field doesn't mention EVERY product they sell in EVERY advertising insert. HOW CAN IT BE???

So is any one going to help me figure out how this stereo performs? I wan't to know if it can Multicast and if the tuner is as good as the one JVC has on its KD-HDR1.

I am aware that they may not manufacture this stereo anymore, but I still want to know.

Crutchfield was HD Radio's earliest supporter among retailers.

This is Crutchfield's  C H R I S T M A S  catalog, not a weekend flyer.

Doesn't that raise any red flags???

Face reality, HD Radio is dead. Ya think?

So I guess if its dead you can just go about your business. You can go back to your normal life and we who own IBOC radios can talk about what remains. I mean, AM stereo has been dead for years and there are stil a few web sites dedicated to that antiquated technology. Makes sense to me, you won, HD is dead I guess there's nothing left to discuss.

No multicast as I said in my previous post.

Perhaps you missed my previous post.

Hey OldJohnny,

I bought this radio for my Subaru about 2.5 years ago and yes it has built in HD radio. Unfortunately, since it is a first-gen HD radio, it does not support multicasting.

I've been looking for a comparable radio to replace it, but have yet to find one. I'm going to wait until next Summer when the low power consumption decoder chips are out in force (the Panasonic uses a lot of power and gets very hot to prove it).

Good point. Go ahead and talk about your little hobby. However, I think those AM HD stations that are interfering with innocent neighbors should shut off their hobby noisemakers while the rest of the world conducts business.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I wanted to know. I guess I over read your posts. I need to catch up on some sleep! These redbulls are awful! jeez!

Correction: Page 65 shows the Polk and Sony table radios, and Page 111 features the JVC KD-HDR1 and Dual XHD6425.

However, I've definitely noticed a trend towards less and less emphasis on HD Radio in Crutchfield's catalogs over the past two years. The "HD Radio" logo is no longer shown in the car radio section (USB has stolen the show), and there's no mention of HD radio in the table of contents on Page 3. Compare this ho-hum attitude against the satellite radio feature on pages 102-104.

As vsa points out, Crutchfield was one of the first retailers to offer HD receivers, so we can't help but ask "what went wrong?" If consumers were actually demanding this stuff, it would be given more prominence in the marketplace.
