Pappas Bankruptcy Update - KCWK goes Dark

KCWK - Yakima, Washington - was shut down as part of the Pappas restructuring. Imagine an entire station turned off!!!

Details, including email correspondence - http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-network-forum/136831-yakima-wa-kcwk-kazw-cw.html

I never could understand why Pappas ever bought this station - it's one of the "newer" stations that was purchased by the Omaha management team. They bought it, when they should have been getting their existing stations ready for the DTV conversion.

Actually KCWK is in Walla Walla and KCWK-LP is in Yakima. I think all the Yakima TV stations are just repeaters aren't they?

Charter is the cable company

http://charter.com

I checked charter in Yakima and Walla Wall for channel line ups and KCWK (which is over the air on channel 9) doesn't appear on their list. The lists skips from Channel 8 to Channel 10 and I don't see anything else on the CW

Actually, the Yakima stations (KIMA, KNDO and KAPP) are the main stations. They operate the semi-satellites stations for Pasco-Kennewick-Richland, Washington and Lewiston, Idaho. The only exception are the PBS stations (KYVE/Yakima repeats KCTS/Seattle, KTNW/Kennewick repeats KWSU/Pullman) and Fox affil KFFX/Pendleton, Oregon (who operates KCYU/Yakima).

Not that hard to imagine. KCPM in Grand Forks ND just shut down last February, and KTFL in Flagstaff AZ shut down in 2006.

That can happen with a small city TV station that doesn't carry one of the major networks, although large cities are not immune, either. LA lost KVST channel 68 in the 1970s and KEEF channel 68 in the 1980s, although the KEEF shutdown was not due to finances.

This is a non-story. Keep your eyes out for agenda driven posts from embittered ex Pappas
people.

Dave may remember that I suggested Pappas was in trouble awhile back when they shut down Channel 19 in Bakersfield for a short time. If you can't afford to keep a low power station on the air, with virtually no overhead you got problems.
Pappas flagship station KMPH still has one of the biggest UHF signals, although not as good as it was from the old transmitter site. I still watch them down here in Lancaster, Ca well over 150 miles away, with a better picture than most LA VHF's 40 miles away. Pappas may not be the only independent broadcaster to go down over DTV!
I interned at KVST 68 while still in high school, VST for Viewer Sponsored Television. KVST tried to do 100% public affairs television at first, but was killed off by serious mismanagement that was skimming off the donations for cars and drugs etc. KVST was still a great place to learn to operate a TV station, as I was the only person in the studios in the afternoon. Imagine a 16 year old with a 2-megawatt major market television station to play with every afternoon after school! From the film chain, to the two 2" AMPEX VTR's and three IVC cameras were mine to practice (play) with till 4 PM.

Most of the decisions made recently by Pappas Telecasting have not met with the same success as earlier ones made by original members of the Pappas organization. Pappas had been previously a slow-moving organization - rarely going with bleeding edge technologies or ventures.

I was an employee for 8 years and I saw the transition from slow and steady to out of control.
