Pappas to Sell Stations - WCWG Greensboro probable

Got word today via RSS/Email Newsletters/Web that Harry J. Pappas is looking to spend more time with his family and enjoy; thus he is looking to sell most if not all of his stations. Forty Years of broadcasting and unfortunately no one to pass it on to.

I recall at one meeting at the NAB, Mr. Pappas introduced new VP's that would carry on his tradition, so that he could step back from the day-to-day operations and enjoy life and spend time with his family. That was the day that the company changed, unfortunately for the worse. You rarely heard complaints on News Blues and F-TV from employees at stations near Mr. Pappas; further away, complaints were common.

I recall when Pappas rarely purchased equipment that was introduced at NAB, they often waited until the bugs were worked out and there were operating units in the field. The company went BLEEDING-EDGE, buying un-tested, often not-production ready equipment for 2 and 3 times the price of established equipment. We had $600,000 in such equipment in Greensboro that could not even be used because of the Strip Club location (it needed extensive electrical and HVAC work). It sat on the floor for two years, I understand it has since been moved elsewhere.

Management turn-over at most of the local stations made things worse. People who were Pappas-hires were being replaced by the new VP. It's a shame.

They say that the most valuable part of any television station is the license. Pappas stations tend to be Full-Power, Maximum-Height. But that is old thinking as today the most important part is the fiber link to the cable company and satellite POP. With the FCC mandating the return of Local Programming and the Cable Companies ready to play hard-ball when the analog transmitters go dark, Broadcast Television is a short-term investment at best. We could see a lot of stations going dark on the next license renewal period when they fail the Public Service commitment. May be it is a good time to get out for the owners of smaller stations.

I have never heard of the radio station WCWG. Where is that located and what is the story behind the station?

Nevermind. Just saw that it is a TV station....I will go back a hide now.

baldtimer,
No problem, most people in the market thought it was a radio station, too!

4 Call Letter changes in 10 years for a station who is best known for its location (behind Harper Topless Carwash and Gentleman's Club) than for anything else.

I spent more time explaining that the station was a REAL TV station despite the lack of news and any "must see" programming. The fact that the station did the least public service possible and didn't even localize PSA's had most people think it was just another cable channel.

This was not the way Mr. Pappas liked to run his stations; but he had given control to the "new generation" who had nothing but the bottom-line on their minds. They were pretty much responsible for running the company into the ground, possibly with the exact result that happened - may be they are the ones who want the group at a discount.

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like an interesting place to have spent some time!

Hope someone buys the loser and spends the bucks to improve it. The picture and audio are the worse. No commitment or investment sadly shows. Amazing no one has gone after them at renewal.

Sorry about the picture and audio. While I was Chief Engineer I scrounged the world to get the station's MII decks on the air. I bought ALL of WXLV's decks (at least 28 of them) when they went digital to use as parts machines. I called almost every NBC O&O for parts and machines. I had stations sending us parts for FREE - PITY ME WORKED!!!!. We bought new tapes as often as we could.

Not so today. New management. Less effort.

FYI, Bad picture and audio is standard for most Pappas stations since the Omaha Management team took over. They look at numbers, not their own TV station. I should have realized that in 1999, when I visited Omaha and quizzed staff about their on-air problems. What I considered a problem was normal for them.

I noticed recently they seemed to have backed off the compressor just a bit - it no longer brings tape hiss to audible levels after a half second of silence.

Now if only channel 2 could back off a bit...there's no reason to hear the ambient noise of the "Jeopardy!" set.

;D Wonder if they could turn the audio OFF on the Good Morning Show?

I found the following posted on WTWG's web page:

CORRECTIONS - There are roughly 100 CW Affiliated Television stations in the United States. The CW as the WB before them, opted to go direct to cable in all television markets higher than 100 - The CW Plus - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_CW_Plus.

On the other hand, WCWG has always been a performer in the WB/CW affiliation. As a WB affiliate, under previous leadership, they won two FROGGIES - the network's fancy affiliate award.

Then you must think, why is the #5 Station in the 47th DMA scoring so high nationally with the CW network? Lots of questions....

There like are about 200 CW "stations" in the US. The CW, unlike the WB does allow affilates in sub 100 markets---one example is Pappas' full power station in Columbus GA. However, in many cases in markets below 100 (and in some cases in the top 100) the CW "affilate" is cable only, on an LPTV, or on a digtial subchannel. Even so, they do consider these to be affiliates..
