Paramount Skydance wants WBD

The Saudis want in.

While I wouldn't mind the Saudis owning the movies that much, I would mind the Saudis/Paramount changing the behavior of CNN. And I *certainly* mind Paramount (at the instence of you-know-who) becoming the dominant force, if not a downright monopoly, in the commercial news media space.

Cosmicbook News?

A more likely scenario, Ellison getting funding from the Saudis, was reported by Variety Monday (one day after...Cosmicbook News?...went with the Saudis buying it outright). Variety printed Paramount's denial yesterday morning:

Not saying the Saudis couldn't buy just about anything and that the current administration wouldn't grease the deal for them, but funding is a lot more likely than buying outright.

This, by the way, is the resume of "Producer Patrick Caligiuri", who is Cosmicbook News(!) source:

Not exactly an A-list insider.

Meantime, there's this. Essential pull-quote:

Senior White House officials have discussed internally their preference for Paramount Skydance to acquire Warner Bros Discovery in recent weeks, and one official has discussed potential programming changes at CNN with Larry Ellison, the largest shareholder of Paramount.

The discussions, according to people familiar with the matter, come as Paramount portrays itself as the best bid for Warner Bros Discovery, after the company announced last month it was open to offers, because it would have an easier time getting through regulatory review.

Ellison often speaks to connections at the White House but, in at least one of the calls, engaged in a dialogue about possibly axing some of the CNN hosts whom Donald Trump is said to loathe, including Erin Burnett and Brianna Keilar, the people said.

Meantime, there's this. Essential pull-quote:

This is so wrong on so many levels! Paramount becoming a communications monopoly (or near monopoly). The President of the U.S. requesting that certain of his critics be taken off of the air. America, wake up!!

Meantime, there's this. Essential pull-quote:

If anyone should be concerned about Ellison and CNN, it's Murdoch and the folks at Fox News. CNN has consistently been the lowest rated news network. Any changes there really won't matter to anyone. The president has demonized CNN and the news media to the point where whatever they say is being questioned, which is good. People should be questioning the news, no matter where it comes from.

CNN has consistently been the lowest rated news network.
They’ve been the lowest rated but that doesn’t mean their ratings couldn’t fall even lower. Imagine repeats on CNN of 60 Minutes or CBS Evening News every weeknight at 7 pm instead of Erin Burnett.

Why does WB keep getting sold? It's been like 3 sales in a decade.

AT&T acquired Time Warner in 2018 just to get WB (they sold Time off). So that's not so much Warners being sold as Warners being bought.

Four years later, analysts told AT&T its stock price would improve if it focused on its core telecom business, so it spun Warners into its own company (largely owned by AT&T stockholders), which merged with Discovery. And that was also a case of a company wanting WB---another case of someone wanting to buy Warners.

Zaslav wasn't looking to sell Warners---his plan was to spin everything except WB and HBO Max off into its own company, not unlike Versant...but once other companies expressed interest in the whole, fiduciary responsibility kicks in and Warner Bros. Discovery has to consider if a sale is in the best interests of shareholder value.

There's a big difference between putting an asset up for sale to raise cash or pay down debt and to have people offering you money without a "for sale" sign on something.

I feel like it’s best if Netflix buys them. Assuming they’d get the cable channels too, they could bring new life to them

Nope. Netflix doesn't want them. Essential pull-quote:

Comcast and Netflix are reportedly interested in buying Warner Bros.' streaming service, HBO Max, its movie and television studio, and its content library. Crucially they are not interested in purchasing all of Warner Bros.' TV channels, which include CNN, TBS and TNT, among others.
