Pardon me while I complain about FM Talk 106.5

So I flipped on the radio today around 11 am, expecting to hear the Information Overload hour of Neal Boortz's show. Imagine my surprise when I hear Mike Huckabee instead.

I rush over to the computer and get on their website and see that they've replaced the only good hour of Boortz's show and dumped Clark Howard's two hours entirely.

Now, for the rest of you in Alabama this may seem inconsequential, but we just lost a music station so Cumulus could put Pensacola's WCOA on FM. Their flagship show? Mike Huckabee. So now we've got Huckabee on TWO FM stations. I know Mobile and Pensacola are technically separate markets but most of the signals overlap one another. WCOA-FM covers everything from Pascagoula to Destin. Having Huckabee on 106.5 is 100% redundant for the end listener.

It's crap like this that makes me wonder why, as a listener, I put up with broadcast radio anymore. We lost WABB to the Christians, we lost the only classic hits station (Journey 100) to WCOA-FM, and I've lost three good hours of radio to a redundancy.

And they wonder why people are going to satellite and online streaming. ::)

I asked Sean Sullivan, the director of programming for WAVH-FM, by e-mail if he was aware of WJLQ-FM becoming WCOA-FM and their programming schedule including "The Mike Huckabee Show". He responded by saying he was aware of the changes planned for WJLQ-FM in advance.

Even though I'm not interested in hearing "The Neal Boortz Show" and "The Clark Howard Show", WAVH-FM would be better off broadcasting segments for the last hour of "The Neal Boortz Show" Monday through Friday and segments for "The Clark Howard Show" live between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM Monday through Friday. I agree that continuing to broadcast "The Mike Huckabee Show" makes for redundant radio from southeast Mississippi to northwest Florida.

Have you looked at the ridiculous station listing on radio.mikehuckabee.com? He's got 13 affiliates in Spokane, WA!

Not to mention 4 affiliates in Mobile and that doesn't even include WCOA-FM or WAVH-FM.

To Mr. Zach,

Maybe one day you'll get to hear The Head of the Republican Party (Rush) on a FM stick.  I'm rooting for that to happen, just for you and anyone else who supports this idea.

Hope my hometown doesn't soon drop him altogether.  It would be a shame and a disgrace if that were to happen.  I hope WHBB AM can keep him on for years to come.

Love what he stands for and learn so much from that talented man, every time I listen to him.

Thanks for your wonderful education Mr. Rush.  I enjoy learning from your program.  It continues to help me in so many ways.

Thanks Mario for that information.

And R.D.P. I'll get personal for a moment and say I don't actually like Rush's show but it's still the top dog in some respects, so it's surprising how the entire CC lineup has languished in this market.

If his show went away tomorrow here, I wouldn't shed a tear.

With all the changes going on down here in paradise, I kinda get a kick out of all the speculation and wishful thinking. Often there's a poster that pegs changes before they happen, and that's fun, but sometimes changes come out of the blue, and that's even better. Like, who saw WABB going to K-Love? Or from the NYC board, NO ONE saw Kiss FM flipping to ESPN radio. Everyone thought it'd be the Family Radio station.

It's those "oh wow" moments that make all this pointless talk kinda fun. ;)

RDP, you're always mentioning how odd it appears that Rush is carried daily in a market as small and cash poor as Selma. Have you listened to the Rush show much? If so, are there a couple of very prominent advertisers that could afford to keep Rush on the air? Or do you know the political backfround of the management of the station carrying Rush? Or is it just one big confusing question mark as to why Rush still airs in Slema?

I listen to him very often.

Yes they have a few local businesses supporting his program.

Not very big chain type of businesses though.

Just a couple of the Mom and Pop type of operations.

I know the owner leans Democrat, from what I've been told.

The PD may lean Republican, since his son Preaches at a local church here.

R.D.P. <><

P.S. Glad that we still get his show. It would be boring and dull without it.

Well RDP, political affiliations shouldn't keep the station owner from carrying opposing views... especially if money is tight and he has advertisers to support the show. Even the owner of Fox News, Rupert Murdock, leans democratic. I'm thinking y'all have Rush on for two reasons. 1) enough republican advertisers are ponying up enough advertising monies to keep Rush on the air and 2) Rush want to be on the radio in Selma because of the city's importance in racial politics back in the 60's and 70's.
That could all change if the station started loosing advertising because the businesses did not want to be associated with Rush. Apparently they are content or happy to have their names heard during the Rush show.

Number 1 would be the main reason why he's still on.

I know many of the people that sponsor his show locally and they tend to be republican in their views.

Matter of fact, I even do business with some of those people.

Thanks for responding to my post.

Hope my info helps.

P.S. Still not rooting for The Head Of The Republican Party (Rush) to find his way to a FM station here.  That would be a big mistake indeed.  I'm glad he's still on my local radio dial.  Would be a great loss for me and his few supporters should WHBB pull the plug on him for good.

Actually, poledo--I think that's the listing for affiliates of his short-form commentaries that ended up being a replacement for Paul Harvey. You can hear Mike Huckabee twice a day on WMFC-FM...Monroeville.

Still, though-- you're right that Cumulus has no shame in fudging. Selma and Linden = Montgomery. Monroeville = Mobile, even for a WMFC-AM that was deleted a year ago IIRC. :D

He's got to be getting paid or compensated by Cumulus for clearing it on 106.5. With WCOA-FM putting a city-grade signal over Baldwin County and the news/talk friendly parts of Mobile, there couldn't be any other explanation that would make sense.

Yeah, I kinda figured that out soon after I wrote the post. But it was such a great post, I let it slide.

I can't remember what station in NW Florida I've heard Huckabee's replacement for Paul Harvey on, but I've heard it a few times. Paul Harvey was good radio. I'll never forget him. I will forget his son.
