Paris Mountain

Does anyone know what radio and TV station's operate from Paris Mountain?
I know a few FM translators are based there, but don't some TV station's also offer translators? (I'm having serious trouble trying to pick up WLOS using an antenna from my house, which is really close to Paris Mountain.)
Thanks! PXL_20221023_154901191.jpg

WLFJ - 89.3
WEPR - 90.1
W225AZ - 92.9
WGTK - 94.5
W242BX - 96.3
W245CH - 96.9
W249DL - 97.7
W253BG - 98.5
W258CB - 99.5
WROO - 104.9

All reside on Paris. WNTV ch. 29 and WGGS ch. 16 are also there as well as some other communications towers.

All those area up there, except 104.9 has its own tower about 1 mile east down the road further down the mountain and not part of this array.

Also missing from the list is
W271BS (102.1) in this array.

Also, same for 97.7, 98.5 and 99.5 which also share a tower about 1/2 mile east down Altamont Road but about 500 feet less HAAT. 107.7 (W299BO) and 105.9 (W290BW) not listed also share the tower.

I didn’t know there was a 102.1 and 107.7 translator up there LOL. I see there’s also a W209CM translator at 89.7 as well as W214CE at 90.7, two more I’ve never caught although I’m normally in the Simpsonville/Five Forks/Woodruff Rd area.

Really, the only GOOD translator signals are 97.7, 98.5, 99.5 and 96.3. Those are definitely the strongest generally speaking. The rest have some sort of directional null, share frequencies with other nearby stations or have adjacents, are lower powered, etc. In Simpsonville the only ones I can really get clearly are 94.9, 96.3 (not great), 97.7, 98.5, and 99.5.

Also theres a 95.3 up there (WWOK) but so weak at only 1 watt. It doesnt even reach its full line of sight signal potential. Barely might reach 5 miles at best, I've heard it weak at best even at Cherrydale Point in Northern Greenville.

That station is supposed to go off the air when 95.9 WLTE officially moves to 95.5

My experience with 96.3 is actually weak to the east barely even reaching Greer and also kinda weak in the Simpsonville area as well. Strongest translator from Paris Mountain I think is 98.5 because it kinda makes it into Gaffney thru the static, even with the 98.3 translator in Spartanburg being closer. 99.5 goes away after Cowpens and 97.7 does ok up here but 97.1 makes that redundant.

94.5 is the strongest signal from Paris Mountain in Gaffney with no issues, 89.3 and 90.1 being the other full power stations though a bit weaker but still do fine.

104.9 has a decent signal for what it is (C3) I think it makes the 98.3 in Spartanburg redundant as 104.9 is stronger here. Also 98.3 in Spartanburg bleeds over and makes Hot 98.1 and X98.5 unistenable in most of Spartanburg and the 94.1 translator for WHZT doesn't help much as its also kinda weak.

WLOS also has a translator booster for Channel 13 on Paris Mtn. But it is very weak and hard to receive. But they have a permit to move to Taylors and change from channel 31 to channel 18. This may block fringe reception of WCCB Charlotte in Spartanburg, which is also on channel 18. But Channel 13 is problematic to receive in the Upstate, so they are adjusting their translators. However in Spartanburg, I can receive WSOC-TV Channel 9.1 and their Crowder's Mtn translator 9.5, so ABC is good to get from Charlotte, and my new Samsung Q90 TV gets the Next Gen signal from WLOS on WMYA channel 35.

Also SCETV is building a new tower on Paris Mtn. for Channel 29 and boosting power as a result of the FCC repack. Should be a good strong signal on channel 8, unlike WGGS which moved their Paris Mtn. signal from UHF channel 16 to VHF channel 2, which is now difficult to receive.

98.5 and 99.5 should be the best translator signals due to the fact that they were the first major ones in the market that were put on with full power. The rest haven’t had as good of frequencies to pick from.

I’ve had issues I posted about in the past with 96.3 where it starts having static issues on 385 at the 185 interchange right where the 60dbu ends. It seems like a weak signal in general and is prone to a lot of e-skip/tropo interference. 97.7, 98.5 and 99.5 don’t have this issue and stay pretty solid 5-6 miles outside of the 60dbu. 97.7 has the advantage of broadcasting in mono which helps.

I live in Laurens County and can not get WGGS or WLOS with an indoor antenna. I can get WBTV and sometimes WJZY and WCNC but I have never successfully gotten WGGS or WLOS.

Above it was stated that WGGS is at Channel 2. That's as bad as it gets. WLOS, I believe, is also VHF, but at least it's not low VHF.

An 8bay UHF antenna or Clearstream 4 antenna and amplifier should pull in WCNC and WJZY as they broadcast from the smae basic location as WBTV. Televes Ellipse Mix or Dat Boss Mix repack antennas with built in amplifier are also good. And Antop 400-BV or 800-SBS make excellent indoor antennas as well as attic or outside. The 800-SBS is also enhanced for FM reception.

And the generic 8bay antennas from Solid Signal or Stellar Labs/Newark are generally less expensive than Channel Master or Antennas Direct. They are optimized for UHF. But among the 8bay antennas, the Channel Master 4228 Extremetenna does best with also pulling in High VHF such as WSPA and WLOS.

I can see Paris Mountain and the towers from my neighborhood and still can't get WLOS :(

WLOS became unwatchable for much of the market after the DTV conversion. Since WMYA 40.1 is a DABL affiliate now, I’m confused why they don’t simulcast 13 on 40.

I agree. I think it's odd that they put WMYA on one of WLOS's HD channels, but not the other way around. 🤷‍♂️

WLOS and WMYA TV are both equally as difficult to receive in Gaffney. Need a great outdoor roof antenna for that. Much more luck getting the Charlotte Channels WMYT and WSOC TV from here.

WMYA is located off of SC-418 between Fountain Inn and Ware Place. Its signal is really only good in the southern portion of Greenville county and Anderson. Not sure about Spartanburg. The signal is better than WGGS but WYCW and WHNS are much better.

Currently the WMYA signal is being used for ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV) simulcasts of 4.1, 7.1, 13.1, 21.1, and 40.1. 40's various subchannels are now hosted on the other stations, but keep their 40.x virtual channel numbers, so there's a chance that you might get some and not the others, if you don't receive one of the host stations and don't have a compatible TV (like me). I didn't have any trouble receiving WMYA in Spartanburg on an indoor antenna prior to the switch.

So in a way, there is an WLOS simulcast in the Upstate, but 99.99% can't get it. The translator upgrades may help for some.

Yea WMYA TV shares the tower with WROQ 101.1

I can get 101.1 signal fairly ok in Gaffney most of the time, but for WMYA we need to mess with the antenna until it comes in but still plenty of digital static at times, same with WLOS.

WROQ starts to cut out now on the way to Charlotte going thru Blacksburg due to the new translator in Gastonia for WGNC (101.1 W266DC). R-L says it sends almost no signal SW but it does interfere in Blacksburg and sometimes into Gaffney as well

In Gaffney most Charlotte channels should be easy to receive, especially WBTV-3, WJZY-46, and WCNC-36 who broadcast from very tall towers outside Gastonia. 107.9, 95.1, and 96.1 also broadcast strong radio signals from these towers. But you can also receive WSOC-TV on their main 9.1 signal from Charlotte and their translator 9.5 from Crowder's Mountain. But a VHF antenna is best for 9.5 as it broadcasts on channel 12. RCA ANT750 by Winegard is a small antenna with UHF and VHF elements, and Channel Master Stealthtenna also has VHF capabilty in a small size. And a top performing UHF/High VHF antenna is the Televes Ellipse Mix, with built in amplifier with automatic gain control.

But if you prefer flat panels, a good compact indoor/outdoor antenna is Antop 800SBS or Antop 400BV, which also have good FM reception. The 800SBS has the built in adjustable gain amp and and an additional FM antenna built in. The 800SBS works excellent for FM reception at my location near Inman, pulling in most major GSP and CLT stations including HD Radio.
