Party 105 / Pulse 87 merger

Would this be possible? ??? if so, would it be a good thing or not? why? better yet, would you like to see this happen or not? why?

I don't see why not, it can only benefit dance music on a whole. This would give party 105 full coverage of the city and the island, then they could be new york's party station or the party fm network. I personally would like to see this even though I think both Pulse and party are good stations, I do think they have their own unique identities.

There are pros and cons to this.....

PROS: Longer reach of a signal, increased audience, ad billings

CONS: Job cuts, who would be the dominant "player?"

Hardrocker9 hit it right on the head about both stations having unique identities. Pulse and Party are both current based, but Pulse leans a bit more on the classic material of the 80's/90's while Party has some hip-hop/r&b interspersed into the format. Then you have two major names in radio (Joel Salkowitz & Vic Latino). Who would run such a merged station? Would one take a lesser role? And in that process who do you boot out since you can't keep both staffs on board.

On paper, with an expanded signal reach, it may sound good but so much other stuff in the background makes it not all worthwhile. If there's going to be a good example of what will happen with merged stations, lets see what happens when XM and Sirius merge up the dance channels there.

If TMO sells 105.3/101.5 or goes bankrupt, I hope Mega Media buys WDRE. But as of right now, it's good to have 2 different dance stations in parts of Long Island and Connecticut, it makes it seem like the format is popular. It would be hard to advertise Hamptons nightclubs in New York City or vice versa, especially with the high gas prices.

this would be a Nightmare/ CLUSTER Crisis. Party 105 transmits from my closet to my bathroom. If Vic Latino gets back into dance, he killed the whole nightlife scene and music then... and it's doomed to do it again if he's involved in any way ~! He's itching to get back into new york radio, and i see him trying everything in his power to convince people to believe his hype. He's a fungus and it would be the beginning of the end for Pulse 87. Just let them be. I hear callers from Long Island on Pulse 87 all the time. There is absolutley nothing in it for Pulse to do so, but failure and a bad association with the wrong people.

In case you're not aware, Vic is already back in dance as he's pretty heavily involved with Party 105 nowadays.

But beyond that, I think this thread was really just a hypothetical question, a "what if" but not based on any actual rumors or anything of the sort.

Party's coverage isn't too bad either, compared to some other Long Island stations. With the translator on 101.5 they do reach much of the island, population-wise. It's not WALK's 50 kw but it could be much worse (see 94.3 for details).

Definitely agree on one thing, this thread serves more as a "what if" scenario. Not that this will be happening anytime soon, and I hope it NEVER does based on the pros and cons I've noted before.

Going back to the post before this regarding Vic Latino, the guy has been in radio for a bit. I remember hearing him on my trips down to Orlando on 95.3 Party back in 1999-2000 as well as his runs on Party 105 (when it was WXXP) and 'KTU. His involvement with Ultra Records has developed many CD's with his "brand" of dance music, all current based.

He is a cool guy, but I have to admit that there was a time I had thought of him as a "fungus", only because I thought of him as the cause to why two guys who were running things at their respective radio outlets got pushed out (Alan Freed - XM/BPM and Andre the DreDog). Vic and I DID discuss this a few months ago at the DJ Expo in Atlantic City so everything is all cool and "water under the bridge".

Vic had NEVER left dance. And as far as it looks, he's just trying to work Party 105 to the best it can be. Despite how good the station sounds, ratings wise (and you can blame signal issues for that) they were always subpar. That's why hip-hop and R&B have been added to the format.

thanks Tony, your right. Vic also plays a ton of hip hop on that station. More so than dance music. Let's not fail to remember that. Also, how about one of the greatest men in dance music being pushed out that wasn't mentioned in addition, Geronimo the G-Man from KTU who was the music director and one of the greatest on air personalities there are who now is at Sirius and programs some of the best dance music there is and along the lines of music Pulse 87 plays.

Party 105 is a JOKE!!!! The station has no direction with muisc no wonder why no one is listening. Dance is a niche format and Party 105 isnt doing it right, they need to stand out somehow and what they're doing now is not helping at all! The signal is terrible as well which dosent give them much exposure besides the boonies! I would just simulcast Pulse on party if I had the choice.

That 101.5 translator is only 10 watts and listenable for maybe 7 miles solid in each direction... i hardly call that ALOT of ground.

True...it's not a lot of ground. But when you consider the fact that the station couldn't tap into Nassau County AT ALL due to their own signal issues, 10 watts and a 7 mile radius is a little something. Though even in Rye, NY along I-95 I would faintly pick up the 101.5 signal of Party.

101.5 covers pretty much all of Nassau in perfect (no tropo or pirate stations) conditions. If there's tropo, 101.5 only goes 2 miles before NJ 101.5 kills it.
