Pasión back on 106.7

Well, it appears that Chicago has an Adult Contemporary FM once more. Pasión 106.7 is back, with La Kalle moving back to 93.5 and 103.1.

It strikes me as an odd move, though. I thought the consensus was that, unlike an overwhelmingly Hispanic market like LA or Miami, Chicago just didn't have a large enough middle class for a Spanish AC. Even if the Recuerdo format has seen better days, I wonder why La Kalle had to move. Wouldn't it make sense to keep it on 106.7, since they're a signal that can compete against WNUA?

What is going on with Univision?

AC partisans are not a function of socioeconomic level, but of the place within Mexico the listeners came from. AC listeners come predominantly from cities, while the larger percentage of regional listeners come from towns, villages and rancherías.

Recuerdo has had its highest numbers ever in Chicago in the 2011.

WNUA, Mega, is AC. Now there are two regionals, two AC and one pop CHR.

Recuardo, did in fact have very good numbers for being on rimshots. They started to falter when they fired everyone that made the station good.

I do NOT speak Spanish, I always enjoyed Recuardo, it was good music. I just happened to stumble on it while scanning the dial and heard La Bamba, the same version you would here on an English language oldies station. It really grew on me, because it was mostly new music to my ears. I will miss the format.

I also like La Kalle hurban format at times, again, to listen to something different.

Believe it or not 93.5 with its 6kW signal, is much better in the southern parts of town than 106.7, because of their location in Lemont, Il.

David, I have a question for you. Will Chicago ever see a tropical format like WLXX again?

I really enjoyed that station, it was the perfect music for a hot summer day by the pool, IMHO ;)

No, for two reasons.

First, the Caribbean tropical genre is not youth-friendly. The core is 35+. Even in Puerto Rico, the station that was the Island's first all Salsa station (December, 1978) has great numbers still, but it's all in older demos. For the most part, tropical stations have become rhythmic stations mixing reggaetón and some tropical.

Second, 20 years ago the Caribbean segment of the Chicago Hispanic population was a high enough percentage to be of impact. Today, what was once half or more of the market is now perhaps 10%. So there is no critical mass for a tropical station.

I loved WLXX and enjoyed the PD, Marilyn Santiago. It was a good station.
