Passing of a radio icon

Don Keyes, former National Program Director for the McLendon Stations died this morning in Dallas after a long bout with emphysema. Don was very instrumental in Gordon McClendon's radio empire. Many radio DJs were hired by Don who became legends in the Texas Triangle - KLIF-1190 (Dallas), KILT-610 (Houston) and KTSA-550 (San Antonio.)

Many of you are saying, "Who?" Don Keyes was there at the birth of Top 40 radio joining KLIF as a disc jockey before being named programming czar of Gordon McLendon’s chain of radio stations. In addition to a legendary radio carreer in management, he was also a very talented dj. He was one of the heavy duty cats who prepared the way for you, today's radio professional.

At the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame banquet in November, Don told some wonderful stories about working for Gordon McLendon. He looked good, sounded good, and was in fine form in early November.

You are correct sir...it is, indeed, the passing of an icon!
