Pat Garrett is back on the air!

This may not be news to many of you but I certainly wish I could say it was in Jax.

Pat has found a gig doing his usual 10-2 weekday shift at Entercom's MMQX in the Triad area of Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point market. They are known as Oldies 93 and it's refreshing to see a station call themselves what they truly are - oldies. The market's a tad bigger than Jax.

I wish you the best Pat! The station's website is www.oldies93.com. Obviously, I wish Pat was back in Jax but I suppose he couldn't wait forever for the powers to be to make a decision.

Renda let's anothe opportunity slip through their fingers with Mr Garrett getting the gig with Entercom. Renda is like a bad car wreck only their the ones that cause the accident and run themselves over and then back over themselves again and again. When it comes to an oldies radio station there's is the most boring and unentertaining piece of trash to come down the pike. Does management even listen? I think not. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Yes, Mr. Capone, it's a shame "they" couldn't make Pat an offer he couldn't refuse. But as I've had time to digest all of this, I'm thinking Pat is better off.
I doubt he would be able to affect all the changes necessary to turn the station around and be more competitve.
The format could have been a winner for them but they made choices that have been proven wrong time and time again. No other way to say it, their numbers suck and it reflects their small town thinking.
If anyone were to review the comments on this board from the time they launched to now, one would find almost complete agreement that the playlist needed to be tightened, the on-air talent needed to complement the format along with proper imaging and programming. No live talent during the key midday period - what can you say? Also, so much great syndicated programming never found it's way there especailly Beatle Brunch. So instead they stick with that cyanide Sunday morning program because they are making a few bucks on that. Again, small town thinking. Yes, Mr. Capone you said it very well. They should be ashamed of themselves.

If you only knew what goes on behind closed doors. Is WKQL broken yes will it get fixed yes. There were other problems at Renda that needed to be addressed first.

It was apparent from Day One that the flip was ill-prepared and there was a total lack of direction. There is no excuse for that. I agree, none of us know what goes on behind the scenes. But there are certain expectations that should exist - broadcasting is a noble business and the word professionalism comes to mind.

Here was a format that should have been launched with little error. Renda's Oklahoma oldies station had a great track record of success. You would think that the exact playlist would have found it's place in Jax. Gees, they could have even resurrected the old Cool 96.9 Fire Cracker Top 500 list as a model since it represented in large part songs Jax embraced. But that did not happen. I heard from a reliable source that those at the local level decided to tweak it and introduce disco to the mix. Given the urgency to get KOOL launched from what we understand, I doubt there was extensive research done to justify this kind of programming. Big mistake #1.

KOOL had a clear opportunity to do things right the first time if you really think about it. The old Cool 96.9 was at it's best when the playlist was tight. Introduce too many different types of music and trying to be something you are not is not a recipe for success. Clearly Cox Radio wasn't interested in oldies but one thing is clear. The numbers went down trend after trend, book after book after Pat departed. And all the 70s played didn't suddenly substantially increase the 30 somethings share of the audience. There are ways of doing it but it takes very very careful selection of songs and positioning them correctly.

And so to this day, I still don't understand why Renda Broadcasting didn't look at what worked and what didn't when they made the decision they made. Taking the KQL calls was mistake #2. By doing that, they set expectations that the old Cool would be back in some form. All the great talent never made it to the station and it took quite some time to even get an afternoon drive host in Tom Murphy. But by then it was too late.

So when we hear the problem will be fixed, many of us are of the opinion the problem shouldn't have existed in the first place. Personally, I would love to see the station become something else. Apologies for the long post folks but this subject always gets me a tad spun up.

It was! That was the problem. For the first 6 months the playlist was exactly like KOMA.

Also TR set the old GM up to fail. There was and never has been any money for 100.7. THey don't have a consultant like WGNE adn WEJZ do.

I think that the new GM is fixing each station one at a time. WGNE has gotten tighter and has dropped their spot loads.

WEJZ is doing the same. Once they are where Gary wants thems I imagine he will tackle WKQL.
