Pat Gray Returns

Pat Gray is back on the air. He's on with Edd Hendee on AM 700 KSEV in the mornings now. Starting January 8, Pat will do the 6-7 am hour on Dan Patrick's station in Dallas... while Edd does his usual show here. Then between 7 and 9 a.m. the two will link up and simulcast the rest of the morning show as a team in both markets.

Don't DJ's have some sort of non compete clause? I'm just a radio fan, not in the biz. I just always thought that there was some sort of waiting period. Or is it because he's in another city?

Kevin, what is Dan Patricks station in Dallas? I wasn't even aware of the fact he had one. Does he own or LMA like he does with KSEV from LBI?

Thanks !

Dan and a dozen other investors just bought and began operating 1160 AM ... changed the calls to KVCE "the Voice of Texas". I believe Edd Hendee is one of the other investors...so is Michael Kubosh, Patrick's Democratic opponent for the state senate. The station was formerly known as KKDL.

Here's the write-up from R&R in November when they did the deal.

Dallas Broadcasting To Launch News/Talk KVCE
Nov. 09, 2006
By Al Peterson

On Monday, Nov. 13 Dallas Broadcasting will launch news/talk KVCE/Dallas, "1160 AM The Voice of Texas." With operations located in downtown Dallas, the new station broadcasts from western Dallas-Ft.Worth suburb Highland Park with 35kw days and 1kw at night.

Focusing on local and state issues, in conjunction with sister news/talk station KSEV/Houston, KVCE's new lineup will include Sean Matthews from 6-8 a.m., joined by KSEV's Edd Hendee from 8-9 a.m. Jones Radio Networks'/Cox Syndication's Neal Boortz will air from 9 a.m.-noon, followed by Texas State Sen. Dan Patrick from 4-6pm.

KVCE also bills itself as a CLOUT (Citizens to Lower Our Unfair Taxes) station "that plans to not only discuss the issues, but take action on them as well."

You're on the mark. As you speculated, they're doing an end-around on the non-compete by having Pat actually at the Dallas station. Thus, as an employee of KVCE he can be on the simulcast in Houston since the KSEV operation is an LMA.

Wow! Clever! Still don't plan on listening but it's an interesting "solution" to a noncompete.

Actually Pat is staying put right here in Houston. Thats what he is saying on the air. He will do the Dallas show from Houston.

If that's true, lemme scratch my "source" off my list...
