Pat Hingle Dies

I'm surprised that those of you that regularly post obits here didn't note the passing of Pat Hingle - a great character actor - age 84. He played Inspector Gordon in the mid 60s TV version of Batman (Adam West), among many other roles. He also worked extensively in movies, and could play heroes and villains equally well.

Although he rarely had starring roles, he was a staple of episodic TV - Quinn Martin shows, among many others. He had one of those great old-guy faces. For example, here's a clip of him in an episode of The Fugitive, when he was probably less than 40 years of age.

Just before the end of his life, reflecting on his career:

I liked Pat Hingle his cop good guy and also murderer roles on Murder She Wrote and Parker Williams dad on In The heat of the night. He was also on a short lived show with Tom Wopat where he played his dad.

Hingle played Commissioner (not Inspector) Gordon in the four 'Baman' films, beginning with Tim Burton's 1989 version and continuimg through the '90s. Neil Hamilton played the role on the TV series.

Had a case of 12-month old induced insomnia last night and was listening to C to C AM, where the subject of Mr. Hingle's passing was brought up. George Noory made one of the most accurate comments he's ever made: "you may not recognize the name Pat Hingle, but go on-line and Google him and once you see him; you'll know him and miss him." So, this morning I did just that and he was absolutely right. I'd enjoyed his roles in hundreds of TV shows and movies, yet never knew his name.

What a great, yet underappreciated, actor! And, he always seemed like a fine man as well. May he rest in peace.

I remember that Pat also played a doctor on Gunsmoke and in fact even substituting for Milburn Stone in several episodes around 1970 or so when Stone took ill. I most associated Hingle in his roles on TV than the Batman movies that he appeared in in the 1990's.

R.I.P. Pat!!

One of his best guest shots was the episode of "M*A*S*H" where he played one of Potter's old buddies who showed up in the midst of an epic pracical joke war..."Whaddaya want, a medal?"

...Hingle also played the chowderheaded judge at whom Samuel L. Jackson memorably threw his NYPD badge in the updated version of Shaft...
