Pat Spekhardt gets the, ahem, axe at WZON

Pat is the best in Maine when it comes to sports talk. To top it off, he was amazingly level-headed in the Bangor news article. He has a wonderful future in front of him.

It's unfortunate that another great talent falls victim to the economic strife that is still hammering the broadcast industry. I wish Pat well in his new ventures.

Just when we thought the "King" stations had a teflon coating.

It's just proves, once again, that it doesn't matter how much talent you have. Nobody is safe from the shaky economy. Best wishes to Pat!

Speaking of the economy, I've heard from multiple sources that another wave of cuts will be making their way through the Bangor and Portland markets soon.

I hope my sources are wrong. Lets hope for a better 2010.

You know how you splurge on a nice T-bone steak, and when you're done with your knife and fork, you pick it up and mow on it til there's nothing left, and then you give it to your dog? Yeah, that's about where radio is now. The meat is pretty much all off the bone.

Not a whole lotta cuts left to be made.

Well, not in programming, at least.

Not a lot of cuts left to be made???? Sure there are! Citadel and Cumulus are starting to syndicate and/or voice track ALL dayparts in many of their markets. The news is making the rounds on all the respected trades. They simply cannot afford the overhead right now.

Which "respected trades" are you referring to?

When there is only one live daypart (or maybe 2) at a station, yes, I would say there's not a lot of cuts left to be made...and still serve up a quality product.

The phrase 'they simply cannot afford the overhead right now' ironically echoes a standard salespitch, i.e. "can you afford to NOT advertise right now?"

This whole situation would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

WoW

I have worked in and around the stations there since 2001 and that move is shocking. Couldn't find a nicer person and someone who EXCELS in his craft. Sad news indeed.
