Patch Panel Wiring Question

Hey,For my home studio, I'm thinking of getting a Tip/Ring/Sleve Patch Panel. I've never wired one, and I have a question.I note that the INPUTS are all T/R/S but the normalized out of the same position is only TN/RN. (it's a "normals out" unit)I'm kinda lost on that. I was expecting all three out. Do I simply run the TN/RN out to the input on the component? or... do i run TN/RN out to TN/RN in on the next position, then wiring the component to that position's T/R/S?So if postion 1 is console Left out, and position 25 is console Right out...i'd run T/R/S into those...and if position 2 is AGC left in, and postion 26 is AGC Right in...i'd run T/R/S into those. So, so far nothing using the normals out. i could simply use patch cords between 1 and 2, and 25 and 26. But I'd like it to feed the AGC unless I patch around it. So, do i wire postion 1 TN/RN to position 2 TN/RN and also position 25 TN/RN to postion 26 TN/RN?Am I thinking this right, or am I doing it backwards? Also, would I be better to have Left on top, Right on bottom... or OUTS on top, INS on bottom? I know that would be personal preference, but what's considered right? Now that I think about it, I guess outs on top (postions 1-24) and ins on bottom (position 25-48) would be best.ALSO... this thing uses QCP MKIV punchdown panels. I don't have a punchdown tool. Any ideas on how i can do it without the tool, or where i can get one? Thanks for your help, guys!-amos

The traditional signal flow of patch bays is the source is on top and it gets normalled, meaning without any patch cords installed it is connected to, the destination jack below it.Inserting a patch cord into a top row often bridges that source so you can route that audio elsewhere without breaking the original path, but inserting a ptach cord into a bottom jack breaks the original normalled path.As far as the punch tool used, you could call one of the broacast supply houses that carry the brand or you might luck out and find someone with an extra punch tool, since sometimes they used to send you one of the manual punch tools with each patch bay. There are options available in the normalling configuration but the above is somewhat standard.Click around this site for some more info https://www6.adc.com/ecom/hier?ITEM=OND24105&PREV=OND63475Georgw Kowal CBNT

most electrical supply places carry punch-down tools, since the electricians these days are also installing CAT cable while doing the 'traditional' wiring in new homesIDEAL makes a good one

doesn't this have to be a special QCP MKVI punchdown tool? (its tip is round)and what about the tip/ring/sleeve and only tip/ring on the normaled out? did i have that right?thanks!-amos

oh well. didn't get it.ebay. i didn't bid high enough. what do you guys think about those behringer patch bays? i can get one pretty reasonable at musician's friend, etc..-amos

The punchdown tool I've seen for these is usually a specific type, unlike the telco or Cat5 punchdown tools.I even have a few ADC audio patchbays in my garage, used to have more surplus ones at a different house.
