Patrick Callahan oldies 103.3

Hi, what happened to him? I heard that he lost his spot because the company wants to save money. I just don't get it, how much money can the company lose providing he only works 3 hours a week!
Can anyone please explain how this works?

Where did you get that Patrick only worked three hours a week??

Patrick was the weeknight evening host, he was on the air live from 6-9 PM every weeknight. That's 15 hours a week on the air, and I'd imagine his salary probably included more paid time for other duties as well. He was heard voicing a number of the spots they ran, for example. Maybe he also did production, I don't know, but I'd imagine he was probably a full-time salaried employee.

The way that the company saved money was that they eliminated the overnight DJ shift by moving J.J. Wright from overnights into the evening slot where Patrick was. Their weeknight overnights are now jockless, eliminating a full-time air talent salary for overnights.

Eli,

I *think* the poster meant 3 hours a night. I'm going to presume the question comes form a "non radio" person. If that is the case, they may not be aware that the "DJ's" have other jobs at the station.

You answered them giving them the information.

Just my $.02 worth.

oops! Yes, 3 hours a day.... 15 hours a week. So here is my another question, if a DJ becomes jobless and he has a job at another location that's far away, is he going to have to sell his house and move there too or can he work from home? I am sorry about this silly question, I just don't know how this whole thing work!

Everytime I see this thread title, I think of a political ticket that would never happen LOL

Things are tough all over. Black Friday at Citadel; John Gambling fired from WABC
See radio-info.com top page etc More to come locally?

If it's too far to commute, then traditionally, they have to move.

There may be some cases where DJ's can send in "voice-tracks" from elsewhere, or produce shows from a home studio, but fortunately, most local on-air jobs still require the talent to be there in person (at least some of the time).

I say "fortunately" because "voice-tracking" is used more often to eliminate local radio jobs and reduce company salaries by having one DJ voice break tracks for many co-owned stations in different locations.

The fact that the broadcasting and media industries often require frequent major, stressful relocations for an individual to maintain work is one of the major factors that has always discouraged many people from staying in the broadcasting field, and to go seek other types of more stable work in other non-broadcasting fields.

Patrick also worked (or voiced...I dont think it was live) the Saturday morning (7am-9am I think) Top 20 Weekly Countdown. I think JJ Wright has also taken over that task.

Don't forget that WODS also dropped Jimmy Del Ponte from the morning show when his contract expired.

So Patrick Callahan wasn't the only victim of the cuts.

Hi

weekends and Fill
PATRICK was on air 15 hours per week

WEEKENDS and FILL payed GREAT!

The Top 20 Weekly Countdown was done live by Patrick (and is now by J.J.) Thursday evenings 7pm-9pm. The Saturday morning version is a straight recorded rebroadcast of the Thursday evening live show.

I'd imagine that unless they have to fix some glitch, no revoicing is necessary from the original live Thursday evening version to the Saturday morning rebroadcast. Note that they don't do weather or make day-specific announcements during the Thursday evening Countdown so that it can be rebroadcast verbatim Saturday morning.

The countdown is my favorite show on the station, because they play the actual Billboard Top 20 from the week in the selected year, including the songs that are not in their regular everyday playlist rotation the rest of the time.

It's amazing how many Top 20 hits from their core years aren't in their regular rotation, and the countdown is the only show (besides maybe Barry Scott's) where you can hear them on the station.

They also pad the two hours out with what they call "chart extras", songs that were in the Top 40 but below the Top 20 that week in the selected year. That's where some really cool stuff is occasionally dug up.

I'm not where I can easily hear 103.3. How true to the chart is their countdown? For example, James Brown had any number of top 20 hits in the late 60s/early 70s that were never played in Boston (except maybe on WILD)that are very unlikely to be known by much of anyone today...do they play those too?

For James Brown, I've heard the countdown play at least (the single versions of) "I Got The Feelin'", "Cold Sweat", "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", and I think I may have heard "Mother Popcorn" and "Super Bad".

He did have a number of other Top 20 hits, but that's not too bad considering that the only James Brown song in their regular rotation is "I Got You (I Feel Good)".

Wow, isn't that nice to only have to work 15 hours on the air a week!!!

What annoys me is they replace him with a re-tread like JJ Wright who has been bouncing around for years. Ugh! Im really disapointed with Oldies 103

I hadn't heard Oldies 103.3 since the new PD took over and I will say that I'm disappointed. there's a jingle package on the air that is quite old and lacks any of the glitter of the old package. The old ID where they would shout "Boston!" was just great and had such energy. They have also scaled back on the jock talk a great deal which I think it a mistake. There is a TON of bass on the processing too...almost drowning out some of the vocals. way too much. Pete Falconi...come back!

I love the countdown, too, but I was told that it's not the exact Billboard countdown by someone who said he checked. It doesn't say "Billboard" top 20 on the station's site. Maybe it's from one of the other charts from back then. On the other hand, you probably know more about it than I.

Sorry Boston Bill but I must disagree with you.

JJ is a professional and from what I am told is one of the nicest guys in the business, he is the only PROFESSIONAL radio person on this board who use their real name when posting. Ya I know others have let their secret identity out, such as Joe McM, and there are others who we know who they are but keep it quiet.

Bounce around? Hello this is Radio! You have a permanent reservation at U-Haul, you never buy a house, you never unpack everything before you are off to a new station, new city, new state. That's if you are even lucky enough to stay in the business.. Clear Channel, Citadel, Entercom, you name it they are slashing like a B movie horror flick. Voice tracking, Frank, Mike, Jack, syndication, off the bird... If you are working you gotta be doing something right.

FIVE stations in a career that spans 4 decades....probably close to 35 years in the business, 20 years with KISS-108, now with CBS doing nights and imaging for WBZ. I'd take that career in a heartbeat.

It may not be the "Billboard" countdowns, I thought it was, but I'm really not 100% sure. All I know is there are a lot of songs they don't normally play.

J.J. is a real quality market heritage DJ and voice talent. I don't know him personally, but I like the personality he exudes on the air.

I enjoyed listening to Patrick as well. Very musically knowledgeable, and smooth on the air.
