Doing play-by-play? If you're talking about the former Pats center, I don't think any ex-player has ever been anything but a color man on Patriots radio.

Bob Starr and WBZ started in 1966 (Gil was color 66-70)

Gallagher left WEEI for Miami after the 64 season and Fred Cusick did the Pats in 1965 on WEEI.

Any idea what this gig pays? What level of announcer is it attracting? Would this be enough for a guy like Sean McDonagh or Ian Eagle, or guys who typically don't get the featured TV games? How about Dave O'Brien?

I'm just curious. To tell the truth I watch all Pat games rather than listen. If the leaves need raking, they wait until after the game.

Wiki lists Gallagher as play by play in 1965 but he had left WEEI for Channel 7/WNAC radio by then.

1965 was Cusick and Ned Martin. Cusick had lost the Bruins job when he went fulltime at WEEI and WHDH used Jim Laing and then Bill Harrington.

Fred would finally get the Bruins job back in 1969 when WBZ got the contract.

Same here, although I'm tempted to turn on Gil and Gino when Dick Stockton gets the Patriots game on TV -- thankfully, it doesn't happen often, since Fox only gets Pats' home non-conference games and Stockton isn't usually assigned to top games anyway. One good thing about Stockton, though ... he's old school in that he feels he has to describe everything that happens on a play even though the medium is visual. (Listen to him on baseball. He'll say "low and outside" every time even though we can see where the pitch is.) This "radio on TV" approach helps if you have to step out of the room during the action.

Gino did play-by-play of a preseason game (IIRC, 1990 against maybe the Falcons?) when Dale Arnold was sick.

Charlie Steiner filled in for Dale for the first week of that season vs. the Dolphins.

Let's get Martin Tyler of Sky Sports to become the new Pats play-by-play man. He could be heard all over the 98.5 Network and be relayed back to TalkSport in England and Today FM in Ireland.

When Trupiano did Sox games he'd yell out "Wayyyy back!!" when a Sox player
hit a HR. One Sox pitcher, John Wasdin, was well known for giving UP home runs. He
soon was nicknamed "Way Back Wasdin" by Sox fans (and wasn't crazy about it).
One time as the Sox were introduced at the first home game, I heard someone
yell out "Wayyyy back!" when his name was announced! :)

Which he would also yell when a big roundhouse swing resulted in a pop to deep short. A lot of folks, including me, got pretty tired of him honing his home run call for his audition tape.

Regards,
TSB

I like the idea of Sean McDonough getting back to his New England roots and get the PxP gig. I'm not a big Don Orsillo fan and always enjoy Sean doing the Sox games on Ch. 25. I've always liked Trup too....did he ever call football games in his career at the college or pro level?

Ha, Castiglione also would have those deep fly to--caught by the shortstop, or the left fielder
runs in to catch it... Joe Castig also known for that sounding depressed last-play-of-a-loss
call: "Swing an' a pop up...it's caught and the Red Sox lose.." Meanwhile John Sterling of
Yanks network would sound a bit upbeat, or maybe more even-keeled, even if Yanks lose "Ballgame over! Cleveland wins..."

Sean McDonough getting back to his New England
Interesting guy. Lots of baggage though (MLB/NFL). He's said he didn't understand why he was replaced by Orsillo (with the same voice/style) but maybe he knows more than that?

I'm sure the Krafts have thought about this for a few years and know who they want and prob have a name --with a backup-- they can announce this spring.

I could swear I remember John Carlson and Tim Horgan doing football on Ch. 56 in the early-mid 70s. Did they do Pats preseason games, or am I just misremembering things from when they did Whalers games?

(is anyone else getting Malware warnings about this site? It's been going on for a couple of weeks)

I'm not but there's a thread about that on the Ask Radio Discussions board.

I have said it before I will say it again Dale Arnold. Has done it before and baggage free-no late night drives through the side of Florian Hall In Dorchester with a Prince look-alike. ...and Dale could double on the Hub for Bruins games when needed. He has always been a great Play by Play guy. I would think that the Krafts like him as well. I am sure they have some say in it. If not him then maybe Meterparel, anyone but Tanguay.

I remember Dale being terrible on Patriot's broadcasts. He would never spot the lines or mention substitutions in the lineups during the game. If McDonough could manage to do that anywhere near as good as Santos, he'd be more than welcome. Arnold should stick to hockey.
