Patty Duke, Oscar-winning actress, dies at 69

Just saw her the other night in Valley of The Dolls, a big anti-drug movie of the 60s. Big movie once upon a time, with Patty Duke, Barbara Parkin and Sharon Tate, and generally, an all around big name cast...Joey Bishop, Martin Milner, Richard Dreyfuss, Marvin Hamlisch, and more.

Patty was a great actress.
Like many young men, I had a huge crush on her way back in the 60's.

May she rest in peace.

2016 has been brutal for celebrity deaths, and this is no exception. RIP to Patty. Way too early for her to die. She was a teenage icon on her 1960s "Patty Duke Show" sitcom and won an Oscar for portraying Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker."

It occurs to me that we don't really know celebrities like Patty Duke well enough to judge what their lifestyle or general health does to their lifespan. When I first saw her death announcement this morning I was shocked as she is just a bit younger than I and has no public history of drug abuse or poor health. Then I began reading stories about her 4 marriages (which can take a terrible toll) and mental issues. She might have been a very troubled soul and we just didn't know how much.

I saw Patty and her husband at the time John Astin in summer stock in Rochester, NY back in the 70's. Both were terrific in a production of "Boeing, Boeing".

I don't remember the identical cousins but I get the feeling I would have liked them.

I did like her in several shows In one she was the President of the United States, and in another she was Helen Hunt's mother. Wow, imagine that. Even though I watched Helen Hunt in some movies and in a few episodes of her TV series with Paul Reiser, I don't remember her as a teenager.

And she wasn't old.
