PAUL A. SELLS PDX

This Seattle-related because Vulcan's home office is here, and because the stations were once owned by Seattle's Les Smith. Point is Paul Allen is selling PDX AM & FM stations to Larry Wilson, formerly at the helm of Citadel (back when it was a RESPECTED broadcaster). These are part of Larry's plan to start a new chain. Wonder if Seattle will be on his radar too?

If you have a couple bucks, this is certainly a good time to be a BUYER!!!

Another Larry Wilson (no relation) was Chief Engineer for this pair until he retired several years ago. He was a great engineer and had everything in excellent condition.

$11 million seems low, even for Portland.

I can't recall what they paid for the station, but I believe it was almost double what it went for recently. Sounds like radio wasn't such a good investment for Mr. Allen.

The challenge is for anyone owning a station in Portland, OR. trying to make a buck, is that the market is radio saturated.

Not in this economy it isn't. Just ask Clear Channel - they may be paying down their debt by trading away stations to bondholders.

It would be AWESOME if people beached by current operators find a home at Alpha (Wilson's new company). He's a class act, knows what a great broadcasting operation needs, and is apparently focusing on GOOD properties to buy. This could easily be one of the last decent radio playgrounds ... and I hope some of the sidelined & under-appreciated talent (both LITERAL talent and business talent) gets the final "win" with this scenario.

My math says this transaction is about 1/3 (or less) than what other PDX sale comp's have gone for in recent years. As I recall, the stations were acquired directly from Les Smith when he finally stepped out of broadcast biz. PDX was end of his portfolio.

Wouldn't be surprised if Alpha got more aggressive in buying more properties. CBS, for example, would love to dump more of its Portland-sized markets. Like the stock market, it's a great time to get in.

Would love to see him acquire the Seattle CBS stations. No doubt he could run them better than the "geniuses" in New York.

I'll give you Jack with your argument.

What would you do with KMPS and KZOK, two stations that have successfully fended off direct attacks?

I would think there will be a "quiet period" on sales, flips and what-not until folks see what PPM delivers around here. Problem facing leaders like KMPS & KZOK is they only have one direction that would constitute "change"!! If PPM continues to show them solid, then rate will hold -- not increase.

Mr. Allen paid $42 million ten years ago. From $42 to $11 in ten years...

Sounds like a stop-the-bleeding move to me.

Nope. It's SOP for a Paul Allen-run operation. Look up "Charter Communications" as a shining example.

But wait a minute. Paul Allen isn't a mega-corporation owner of radio stations! How can an independant local owner lose so much money doing radio? ::)

I guess that blows the theory of many folks on this board now doesn't it?

Somewhat. By some people here, you're not allowed to make a profit and you must have a 10,000 song active library played on AM with live personalities, Pat O'Day in the morning, DJ No Name middays and Robin & Maynard afternoons.

It really is breathtaking how some people on this board are so clueless.

AQH,

Robin and Maynard would be a good start. I know you're making a funny, but talent is in short
supply! Mike West is another talent I miss hearing. I highly doubt any station could come up with
the $$$ to bring R&M out of retirement. In fact, I've heard Robin has house in WS on the mrket and
is set to move to Northern Montana.
