Paul & Al

Paul & Al deserve their own thread. It has been widely reported - including on WJAR - that Paul & Al are being let go effective September 1.

The duo have been a staple of Providence radio for 36 years. They are second to Salty Brine in terms of morning drive longevity.

WHJY has long been a personality-driven station, and iHeart has recognized that. 'HJY is one of the only iHeart stations that has never used Premium Choice jocks and has always staffed every shift.

What's next? I assume Doug & Jenn will move to mornings and the syndicated Valentine in the Morning will replace Doug & Jenn on Now 93.3. Afternoons will probably go to an iHeart voicetracker.

Rhode Island has always had a strong affinity for radio personalities. There's a beach named after Salty. Dismantling the personalities from a personality-driven station, a station that is reportedly profitable, is a sad sign of the times.

For what it's worth, Brian Mulhern posted on his Facebook page that Paul and Al are retiring and are not part of the round of iHeart layoffs. His brother Kevin is producer for the show.

Paul and Al's expected last show is on September 1st, which is close to HJY's 45th anniversary.
