Paul Alexander leaving ESPN 1250

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/nfl/2011/07/alexander-leaving-espn-1250-the-zone/

Longtime San Antonio media member Paul Alexander said Monday he’s leaving his job as host of “Bringing It” on ESPN 1250 “The Zone” to take a job as a television news director at the NBC affiliate in the Valley.

“Tough decision,” Alexander said in an email. “Agonizing in many ways.”

Alexander, known as “Coach A” to his listeners will work at ESPN 1250 through the week before reporting to work in the Valley on Aug. 8.

KVEO is a unique operation. They have reporters gather the news and upload it to a sister station in El Paso where the actual newscasts are produced and downlinked back to the Valley. On the upside, the newscasts are LIVE, but Valley folks won't be running into the anchors at the local HEB.

The other problem is the way they split the local news into Upper Valley Report & Lower Valley Report? Does that really work for them? It sounds like it would be a built-in tuneout for half the Valley half the time. But that's a topic for another board.

I wonder if Alexander will be able to work in some Sports Talk Radio time in the Valley? IIRC-- The pickins are kind of slim in this format down there.

What is going to fill that timeslot? On his last show, when asked PA said he didn't know. Will it be a new local live show or another nationally syndicated satlink sports show?

Remember that there was a gap of about a year when he left to take the job at St. Anthony's and during that gap, they used whatever ESPN had on the schedule (Scott Van Pelt?). I'll bet they make that slot national again, especially since if the NBA lockout lasts a long time, there won't be as much local demand for sports talk.

It most likely won't matter what they throw into that slot. That's Jim Rome time, except when Rome takes vacation, because he gets a lot of vacation.
