Anyone know WHY the change with Paul and Phil?

Did they get along?

Was it their decision...or was it the stations?

Anyone know the inside story?

Thanks!

Good question. I haven't heard anything that leads me to believe that they now can't stand each other or anything :) And if that were somehow the case, why would they continue to work together until mid-June on Y92?

My gut tells me that both have different ideas of their future, and that Phil wanted to get out from the duo's own shadow and keep doing issues talk, and that Paul was happy to stay on the FM side. Just a hunch.

Lots of things:
--Phil wanted to get into talk. Management is pretty excited he can do the job.
--They get along. It's nothing like that. After years together, you get tired. The definition of success in a partnership varies from team to team. Some stick it out to the end, or seem to; others don't. This one didn't.
--Money. If you don't know how much these guys are making, don't ask; you'll get sick. Let's just say Clear Channel doesn't like having to swallow it but they signed a no-cut deal which expires in June. Getting them on the talk station was a way to get more mileage on the salaries. They certainly didn't get extra pay for doing the extra work. They won't get paid as much when they're renewed.
--For people who want to talk on the radio, there is generally no future in FM; some are lucky enough, most aren't, and quite a few of them aren't good enough anyway. Some will argue that there's no future in FM anyway. Certainly there's no future for someone who wants to talk when they're doing mornings on a limp AC, and these guys aren't exactly ratings monsters. Trust me, Phil is way past done with the FM.
--Reality. If you're overpaid, all the more reason to bail before you're dumped, and you will be dumped. The writing on the wall says, "Hey, if I wanna stay in this business, then I have to move on to talk radio." Think about this: even if these guys only made 100k each (they make much more), when their contract expired do you think management would keep them if they could hire someone else for less? This isn't exactly a high maintenance format. In fact, the PD (who is not well liked) would be just as happy if there were no personalities on the air. He's one of those.

Hope that helps...

Obviously not. BUT, if they're making more than 100k at Cheap Channel then I want their agent or their negotiating skills. Talk about...hey... robbing Peter to pay---->PAUL.

And PJ, I love the inside dirt. Hope you keep your job so you can shovel some more. Thanks!!!

Phil has long been tired of the Y92 morning show but the money has been
sooooo good. And if you think 100k is a lot of money, try 200k + endorsements.
They don't hate each other but they don't love each other anymore either.

It is interesting that Phil is the one making the jump to talk. Although
he is basically conservative, he doesn't hold a candle to Paul, who
has some very big conservative opinions...

Cheap Channel doesn't pay the grunts big money, but they shower their big talent with the BIG dollars.

You don't want their agent; you want their previous market manager who signed them to a 3-year, no cut deal. You'll have to move, though. He's in Atlanta now.

Paul and Phil are 2 of the nicest guys in radio. I don't find it as interesting that Phil is the one making the jump to talk. From working with both of them, Paul certainly has more conservative opinions, but Phil has the skills to provoke people and he's A LOT more edgy!

Very well said... I was once a grunt, now I work for another company. <P ID="signature">______________

Sure, why not. Up until October of this year I was Clear Channel Sacramento's IT Manager.

You poor, poor bastard...WireReady, NexGen, crap money...And all in that same building I worked in years ago, when it had only two stations.

That could take you back as late as 1997 or so, when "Cool 101" moved in from Marconi Avenue. (It'd moved in from Auburn years earlier, to a building across from a 7-11 and the former Northeast Sacramento-based Greyhound station...)

I'm more interested in where RE landed.

Paul may or may not be more "conservative" than Phil, but it's pretty clear that Phil has more of an interest in the drive needed to do a midday issues talk show...so it probably landed where it would be expected to land.

As far as how much they make, I don't know, but it was widely believed in the market that they were the highest paid hosts in a building that included both Tom Sullivan and Dave Williams in that salary stratosphere. I don't know if that was "highest paid" for each of them, or for the show.

I'll just add from a post above that the Radio Enginerd is one of the nicest guys you'll meet in a radio engineering department. And yeah, Paul and Phil are pretty much well liked in that building.

Now, enough of this lovefest and let's get back to trashing people.

Never got a chance to meet RE, as he was there long after I left town... but the CC engineering folks have been almost universally great people, going back many years. It's not a surprise to read that. :)

You misread my message - I was referring to the board's own RadioEnginerd.
