Paul Daugherty officially announced as "Sports Talk" host on WLW

I can't believe nobody has posted or commented on this yet.

Here is a potential train wreck.

Two quotes jump out:

1. "But I have to learn to be a radio guy." Hey, CC, you don't let guys learn radio at one of your premiere stations. You let them learn it a smaller market or at a lower-power station (i.e. 1530 HOMER).

2. "I'm just there to moderate. It's not about me." Hey, Doc, it had better be about you, or you won't have ratings. Successful sports talk hosts drive the show and attract listeners by being aggressive and outspoken on the air. That is true for all talk radio. Andy Furman, Jim Rome, Mike and Mike (ESPN), Tony Bruno (Sporting News) and other big-time sports hosts didn't become famous because they were moderators.

I bet CC has some decent hosts in smaller markets that are more qualified and would do this well. The only thing Doc has is name recognition, but if he can't deliver, his numbers will drop.

Well, one thing I could see as a potential issue would be Paul's not really wanting to piss-off any players/coaches/owners who might just simply not let him have any decent access for interviews as a pay-back for something negative he might have said about them on the radio.

This wouldn't be an issue if he wasn't still employed by the Enquirer.

Bob Trumpy didn't have any radio experience before hosting SportsTalk...first on WCKY and then on WLW. His successor, Cris Collinsworth, also didn't have any experience. You'll recall that both eventually left WLW for an NFL gig with the big TV networks. And both were/are very successful.

Granted, a station like WLW shouldn't become a training ground for rookies. But for some reason with sports it seems different. As far as Doc, whenever he's subbed I've enjoyed it. I think he sounds quite good and I personally like his laid back style. But CC needs to find a place for Gamble. While he may not be everyone's cup of tea, I think he was a perfect fit for the Sports Animal. They need to put him back over on 1530.

Wow, I am listening to Alan Cutler on WLW Sunday afternoon and he is pathetic. Thank goodness he didn't get the sports talk or after innings gigs. He simply cannot relate to callers that don't agree with him.

Ken Broo was on earlier in the day and just makes Cutler look terrible. I wish Broo would get a radio gig, theres ways to deal with callers that have a different opinion than you other than however it is that Cutler does. Its uncomfortable to listen to many of his rants with callers.

Maybe these WLW gigs aren't as sought after as they used to be.
