For the past couple months, Paul Harvey Jr. has been voicing the morning news program in place of Paul Sr.
The format/content of the program has changed somewhat to more of an in-depth discussion of items not found on the front page.
Any thoughts from the peanut gallery???

I haven't listened to Paul Harvey News for several months, maybe closer to a year. What happened to Paul Harvey, Sr.? I know he has to be up in his 80s and probably not in the best of health.

His wife died and his health began to deteriorate.

Paul Sr. recently turned 90. Given the traumatic events he has gone through over this past year, the fact he returned to the microphone, even for limited work, is astounding. I for one thought he'd retire, but it has to be so interwoven into his life that any retirement is impossible.

With all due respect, Paul Jr. is a fine writer, composer and musician. And his writing for ROTS is tremendous. But his delivery is so manufactured and derivitive of his father, it simply doesn't work.

Ron Chapman is as good a fill-in as you will get right now, along the lines of Gil Gross or Doug Limerick. Well, at least he's better than Fred Thompson, but then again, anyone would've been better than Fred. ;)

The last time I heard the Harvey noon show, sometime last week, it was Ron Chapman.

I gotta say...he has a similar style to Paul, and it wasn't as rattling as it has been hearing other folks fill in for the master (Thompson, in particular).

The bad news? The format and show likely ends when Mr. Harvey hangs it up, or passes from this mortal coil.

I'm sure Citadel would like to find a way to continue it, and may even do so for a while with Chapman or whomever. But the long-form "Paul Harvey News" is only still alive today because Mr. Harvey is, and no matter how good Ron Chapman is (he's a long-time Dallas radio pro), he won't be able to keep advertisers that are solely aboard for Mr. Harvey's endorsement. And affiliates will dump the show the day PH is no longer going to be doing it, or won't come back, or passes on.

A prediction: Citadel will continue to syndicate the "Rest of the Story" as a feature, with stuff Mr. Harvey has already done, and his son eventually taking that over in full.

Oh, about Gil Gross...

If there were indeed a future for a "next generation Paul Harvey News", it'd be with Gil. He's a talented, personable broadcaster (and a nice guy, too).

He's currently doing 2-4 PM on Citadel/former ABC talk powerhouse KGO in San Francisco. I'm guessing he's happy with that arrangement, and wouldn't want to try to fill PH's legendary shoes.
