PAUL HARVEY.......GOOD DAY.

MIKE HUCKABEE 'subbed' this morning and did an excellent job.

He's folksy, humerous, well spoken, and although he sounds nothing like HARVEY,
he'd make an excellent permanent replacement (which is apparently being talked about).
Even though ABC's 'official' position is still that "HARVEY isn't retiring," I think we all
know, he won't be back.

I'd be more inclined to say "because he sounds nothing like HARVEY, he'd make an excellent permanent replacement." With the exception of Paul's son, any sort of sound-alike would be the worst possible choice to replace Harvey. Someone with a distinctive style, yes. But it should be a different distinctive style.

wonder how many people back in 1952 thought Paul Harvey was "the next HV Kaltenborn". I'll wager there are very few people posting here with first-hand memories of that time.

You're probably right. Most of us only saw and heard HV Kaltenborn briefly in the movie, "The Day the Earth Stood Still", which was made in 1951.

There have been references to "the family" making the decision on if or when Paul Harvey will return. Is he incapable of making that decision on his own? Has he taken a turn for the worse physically since his wife's passing?

I was really surprised in a 1979 visit to Hill Air Force Base in near Ogden, Utah to stop by "Harman's Cafe" and find "Kentucky Friend Chicken" as an item on the menu. Thinking "boy, are these guys in trouble" the waitress explained that they were grandfathered to sell it under an agreement made before the KFC chain was started in 1964. Of course, I HAD to order it, and it was the real deal, and I remember getting a HUGE chicken breast. The waitress explained that franchise owners selling "so-many-pieces" of chicken would buy the smallest chickens available on the market.

Back to the topic, I think only Paul Junior is a viable way to keep the Harvey show going... A "junior" is a good way to keep a person's "brand name" going...Douglas Fairbanks Jr was almost a seamless transition, and do a google search on "Frank Sinatra Jr - Brazilian Tour 2008" There are better voice imitators of the old man, but Junior pulls in the crowds and the money....

It is likely that PAUL Jr. will finish out PAUL Sr's contract which ends in 2010.
After that, the franchise will most likely (and probably should) be retired.

As a fan of the show, I wish Paul Sr. would have realized the inevitable a
couple of years ago and finished solidly (i.e. MIKE WALLACE, DAVID BRINKLEY),
rather than just withering with a slow, sad demise.

The very drive and zeal that enable someone to rise to outstanding success make it very, very hard to turn loose. Some die too young, but the rest of us someday get to face that decision of our very own. For those of us who are not prominent, not big stars, only our family, friends and co-workers have to endure and observe the slow, sad demise.

Written by someone who longer has to bring up the subject of "Senior Discount" when ordering coffee at McDonald's.

Quit now? Hell NO!

Can you "age out" of the senior coffee at McDonald's???? Is there an upper limit?
Do they just give it to ya free after a certain point? [looking forward to saving some scratch in a few years] ;D

Though he has been in bad enough health not to be on his own program, I think the "family" reference should be taken to mean that he and his family -- especially since Junior is also a business partner -- should make the decision.

Consider it a mere truncation.

Goat Rodeo Cowboy makes a good point. I know people who work in industry ( I am still a lab technician by trade and did radio on the weekends most of 30 years) who are in their 70's and still working. They like doing what they are doing and it gives them a sense of purpose, or if you will a reason to get up in the morning.

I know others who did retire from whatever type of work they did, and who have enough other interests and may volunteer in some capacity to keep active and be useful. Some have enough money that they travel and do things so that they truly have enjoyed their retirements or started a second career, possibly in something completely different than the work they did most of their lives.

I believe that those who keep active, both physically by doing things, even if at a slower pace, and those who keep their minds active, reading, writing, taking college classes, working, volunteering, etc tend to live longer than the rocking chair set, who've sort of given up and seem to lack a reason to get up in the morning.

I don't believe there is any evidence to support this next thought I have, but who knows, there even may be some folks who use talk radio as a vehicle for them to stay active in the political sense. Then by getting fired up about some issues or issues by Rush/Hannity/Beck, or on the lib side Air America, Bill Press, NPR, etc, they either stay involved or get involved possibly for the first time in their lives politically other than simply voting. It gives them a reason to get up in the morning trying to help make the nation or planet a better place. Far better than the seniors sitting around watching soap operas on TV all day and becoming vegetables. I can hear Rush now proclaiming that he's providing a public service to the seasoned citizens of this nation, by giving them a reason to live, etc.

We'll never know, but it's possible that by doing his radio shows all these years (obviously Mr. Harvey loves what he does) has kept both his body and mind active giving him a reason to live into his 90's.

I didn't mean to indicate that eventually to get TOO old for the senior discount. ;)

I have had the good fortune of looking young for my age so the first time I walked into a McDonalds and ordered coffee and the person taking my order rang it up at the Senior Price and announced it out loud, I went home and told my wife it was a very, very, very bad day.

I finally got over the phobia (of growing old?) and learned to say out loud "and a SENIOR coffee, please." I had a few question me on that one for awhile. BUT, no more do they question me. No more do I even have to ask for it. They just automatically ring it up.

Free? No.

But at Quick Trip about every 37th time, they look at me, smile, nod their head and say: "See ya next time." (Translation: put your money back in your pocket. Today, it's on the house.)

I'm surprised nobody has brought this up yet, but today Ron Chapman announced that Paul Harvey is coming back on Saturday's broadcast and will gradually phase back in, and there was a preview clip: http://www.abcrn.com/harvey/wma/thursdaypm.asx

It won't surprise me for Paul Jr. to eventually be phased in as Paul Sr's replacement, with Paul Sr. being on a few days a week until he decides to retire. But at least he is coming back. Also, consider that even if Paul Jr. is 60, that could be another 30 years if he is able to stay on as long as his dad.

i heard it. it was definitely him. and he sounded ok (frail, but speaking normally)
but the whole thing was weird. He spent the whole first segment rambling back and forth
between his personal health and losses and some strange reference to 'Wyatt Earp.' (creepy
and incoherent).

his handlers didn't do a very good job helping him prepare copy for his 'return.'

also, it didn't sound like a studio recording (probably recorded at his home or a convalescent
facility). i suspect it took the better part of a day or days to record and piece that segment
together.

but, it was probably enough to placate his advertisers..... the fact that he was just there. (even if
he doesn't make another 'appearance' for say six months).

..... as was predicted, no reference to retirement. him vowing to 'gradually resume' his duties.
it'll be interesting to see how long this continues ...

Paul was back with the midday news on Friday, August 1. Indicated during the news some Q&A on his web site, a chance to ask him questions which he would answer on future newscasts. Kind of a surreal experience - nothing mentioned about his long absence from radio over the past few months.

I also heard Paul Harvey with the mid-day news on Friday August 1st. He sounded pretty good and deliveried the news in his usual style. He did talk about taking questions on his web-site, and did mention he would answer any and all qustions about his health and what you could give him as a 90th birthday gift, but he would no answer who he is going to vote for in the November election. Overall, his timing seemed good and there seemed to be no mistakes during the broadcast. And, it did sound like it came from his normal studio. I did not know if it was his first appearance back with the mid-day news since taking the time off. He made no reference to that or in thanking those who filled in for him. I will be interested to see if he will be on the air on Monday, or if this was a one shot deal for a while. I will also mention that he spent time promotion next week's "rest of the story" broadcasts, telling history teachers to make sure to listen all week for some type of historical information on the stories.
