Paul Harvey's Little Mistake

Last week ABC sent out a quick demand that all stations pull their Paul Harvey broadcast on a particular day. It appears that while doing the Pat Robertson story on how he called for the assassination of Venezuela's President Chavez Harvey accidentally named Jerry Falwell by mistake.

Did anyone happen to run it? Seems like some writer surrounding Harvey would have picked up on that? How long is Harvey going to continue? I heard him a few weeks ago stumble through the "Rest of the story." He got to his kicker line...and started his infamous "I'm PAULLLL Harvey.........." and then stopped because he hadn't done the kicker of the story.

He then rambles the kicker which then made no sense and then did his "I'm Paul Harvey...........................................Good day!" Wow was it bad. I was really embarassed for him. Come on ABC...help the old man out. Maybe time to retire.

> Did anyone happen to run it?

See my post on the C2C (national radio) board
regarding which feed may have had the goof.

Paul Harvey writes his own copy (and on an
IBM Selectric typewriter, IIRC from an edition
of "Tower Site Of The Week" on fybush.com).

I heard that mistake. He did apologize nicely the next day but this is a trend. What with his increasingly extreme rightist political opinions you wonder if his tirades are to be taken seriously or are symptomatic of senility.
______________

Paul Harvey is a man with a lot of class and good taste.

I'd bet anything that his "goof" had more to do with him being 86 years old than anything else!

Paul Harvey has been around a very long time, and he deserves the right to decide when it's time to pack it in. I hope he has the good sense to leave a little too early than a little too late.

Actually, Harvey has gotten less political over the years...

The Harvey of the 70s and 80s would frequently rant about reining in pornography (he was for it), the draft (he was against it), and other topics in his daily cast. The Saturday Night Live parody that had him saying "Let's kill the Arabs... and take... their oil!" had the tone right, even though it probably didn't reflect his actual take on the topic. If you've only been listening to Harvey in the last ten or 15 years, you haven't heard the really political Harvey.

Sure, and he truly loved the late Ronald Reagan! As a matter of fact, Harvey was one of those people who (while being interviewed by the likes of Larry King) would often times affectionately refer to Reagan by his nickname "Dutch"---And that is why some "left-of-center" friends of mine always disliked Paul Harvey! Harvey's deep and abiding admiration for Reagan made some people I know sick to their stomachs! LOL!

Oh, well! Whatever! Who cares?! LOL!

Personally, I like Paul Harvey! I think he's a good guy!

Doubt he's any moe "rightist" than he was 10, 20, 30 or even 50 years ago.
______________

Only 86? Damn, I thought he was at least 120!

He does a five-second news story, then "page two" is a five-minute commercial, which is my cue to change the station.

The other day I was at home depot, and someone was asking the clueless clerk where to find J.B. Weld. He had no idea, so the customer said, "you know, the stuff that Paul Harvey is always advertising." The clerk just looked at him and asked what the bleep he was talking about.

Just like Rush Limbaugh isn't worried about stooge podcasters talking into a microphone about Amazon gardenias while sitting in their underwear, Paul Harvey isn't worried about the ignorant, sub-$18k demographic.

Or maybe Paul Harvey (or his newswriter) indeed wrote "Pat Robertson" in the script, but on the air, Harvey may have said "Jerry Falwell" by mistake.

It ran here in San Diego! I heard it.

Of course with so much publicity the story got I'm sure that everyone had it figured out.
