Paul Joncich leaving WOIO

That or he wanted to be out west again. Remember, he was in Sacramento before coming to Cleveland in 2006 replacing Ryan Andrews (remember him?).

Paul joined 19/43 around the same time as Danielle Serino, who replaced Tiffany Burns (remember her?), to form a new weekend anchor team before he moved to nights to join Sharon Reed at 5 and 10PM. Even for a while, he and David Wittman switched the 10 and 11PM slots for a while in '07 and/or '08 before switching back. He was the guy for a while before settling into his current gig - anchoring the 4:30 and 5:30PM news and reporting for the 10 and 11PM news. For a while, he was also on in the morning after Jeff Eliasoph was let go. He's done a lot of different time slots.

I'm sorry to see him go since I liked him, but I do wish him the best.

Now, he's the third high profile person to leave 19/43 next to Lynna Lai and Sharon. I do wonder who will replace him. Also, I have not seen Tiffani Tucker for a while. I bet she is the next to go.

As I write this, I saw a commercial on 19 saying they gained viewers in EVERY newscast: 6AM, 5PM and 6PM with number one rankings at Noon, 4PM and 11PM. (There was a source credited at the bottom.) They also mentioned that 3 and 5 lost viewers in every newscast.

Let's examine that, shall we? (And yes, I hate doing ratings, but...)

* 4 PM - they're the only newscast on the air at that hour.
* 11 PM - CBS delivers them top prime time ratings. 19 could broadcast a test pattern after the CBS prime time lineup and be competitive.
* 6 AM - I find that hard to believe, given the general dominance of Fox 8 News in the Morning, but I don't have the numbers.
Can't explain 5/6. It's possible Romona gave them a bump.

That small print is probably something line "A25-54, date". They may even split hairs regarding men vs. women, a different age demo slice, etc.

Paul J. was talking about his move today, and did mention "going back west" a few times. He was an anchor at the low-rated CBS affiliate in Sacramento, and left shortly before the network bought the station.

Isn't that the same station Kris Pickel was at before she joined WKYC?

You have a point ratings. At least they credited it instead of making it up.

It still could be possible at 6AM with 19 gaining, possibly at the expense of 5 and their morning show.

Ah, missed that part about "gaining" vs. #1. Yes, they could gain viewers at the expense of another competitor, but they're just adding to the supposed #1 finishes to make it look as big and impressive as possible.

Well, Tiffani's back and it looks like she'll be taking over Joncich's old slots. (4:30/5:30, and reporting at 10 and 11)

Me thinks Tucker was AWOL due to maternity leave. For some reason, 19 keeps that info hush-hush (like with Sharon Reed and others). Usually, stations gush all over expectant personalities.

I think she was just filling-in as I saw Blake Chenault sat in those same chairs on Friday. Tiffani also filled-in for Denise Dufala today at 4. It is nice to see her back though. I think there is going to be a rotation of current personalities anchoring in the 4:30/5:30 slots until a replacement is named.

Now that the dust has settled after Joncich's departure, here's how WOIO's new anchor lineup looks:

Mornings - Brian Duffy and Catherine Bosley
Noon - Bosley and Harry Boomer
4 p.m. - David Wittman and Denise Dufala
4:30 p.m. - Tiffani Tucker and Danielle Serino
5 p.m. - Wittman and Romona Robinson
5:30 p.m. - Serino and Dan DeRoos (the "Big Board" web guy)
6 and 11 p.m. - Robinson and Dufala
10 p.m. (on ch. 43) Wittman and Tucker
Weekend evenings - Lydia Esparra
Sunday mornings - Denise Zarrella (wife of sports director Tony)

That is a good lineup. Glad they've settled on it. However, don't be surprised if they change it again. Nothing's really stable in Cleveland television anymore as evidenced by moves last year and this.

George Smith has started today on WOIO.

He'll be a co-anchor with Danielle Serino on the 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. newscasts, and a reporter on the 10 and 11 p.m. news (of course the 10 p.m. news is on sister station WUAB).

So here's the anchor lineup as it sits right now:

Mornings - Brian Duffy and Catherine Bosley
Noon - Bosely and Harry Boomer
4 p.m. - David Wittman and Denise Dufala
4:30 and 5:30 p.m. - George Smith and Danielle Serino
5 p.m. - Wittman and Romona Robinson
6 and 11 p.m. - Robinson and Dufala
10 p.m. (WUAB) - Wiitman and Tiffany Tucker
Weekend evenings - Lydia Esparra
Sunday mornings - Denise Zarella
