His Statement

This is what he wrote on his MySpace.com account:

"Today my career at WAAF came to a very abrupt end. I've been let go. I don't know why really. The explanation is that station ratings are down all over, and they needed to make a change.

This is only the third time I've ever been fired. But...it hurts pretty good.

I wish my friends there well. I'll be around the dial somewhere"

There ya go if you wanna check it out.

That is too bad.
It seems to me that being a Rock DJ must be a hard gig right now due to the amount of lousy music being put out right now.

I don't think "it's only rock 'n' roll" dj's that are facing the on-the-air guillotine!

Being a DJ in ANY FORMAT these days is a hard gig right now....simply because many excellent, talented, on-air people will suddenly do a "vanishing act" based on 'the bottom line' of a broadcast group!

He called me last night and told me, I swore he was kidding. Another move that does not make much sense from the outside looking in. Paul is a talent and a good man. He'll rise and be back before you know it.God this business has fallen into suck-dom.

The Bottom Line...

Agreed.

While I don't know the particulars at WAAF, it's Entercom. From personal experience, Entercom makes many moves that don't make much sense except from a bottom line perspective.

Someone less talented (and probably a lot cheaper) will probably end up on the air at WAAF. Can anyone say voice tracked? Another reason 'corporate radio' sucks... <P ID="signature">______________

music has ZERO to do with it... if you look at his blog... so may people are upset... but i wonder how many of those people ever filled out a radio diary? more than likely, none.

if you want to support a DJ, then tell...no write down what station/DJ you listen to.

Disagree:

Music has something to do with it, the trend being that you're told to essentially shut up and only talk about the music, given the musical cycle has been pretty weak the past couple of years so then the music plays a pretty hefty part. Then when the personality is drained from radio consultants say that there is not as much passion for radio anymore, because of the Ipod? partly but more than that stations havent given people reason to sit by tthe radio anymore. My PD is pretty smart in that he realizes that the listener can get info on who's touring where and when almost anywhere, so his theory is to talk about lifestyle topics that make sense, basically to be entertainers again.

Paul is a pro on a level with few others, he'll be fine. It's only been one day and very little changes that quickly for the better. He will succeed. His problem will be where does he go from here? Afternoons at WAAF were his dream gig, I can relate. Although I was given the honor of holding my dream post for eight years he was not as lucky, so the question then becomes where do you go when you've attained your dream? most things afterward can seem pretty anti-climactic. He'll sort out his options and be back to kicking ass in a flash.

You have a good point, but still... write it down.

So what does this mean for me, trying to get into radio somewhere. I've lived in Mass. so I am familiar with radio there and in New Hampshire. Of course, I don't expect to get my first job with a powerhouse like WAAF, but when radio is being run by corporations such as Citadel and Clear Channel, I might be the person they hire that runs off a veteran because I'll come cheap (they'll think so, anyway) and preserve the bottom line. I worked hard to get to this point, but what am I to do? Will I always be at the mercy of corporate radio? I just want to get my foot in the door right now.

Hi Stefanie!

My only suggestion is to keep a few of your "professional broadcasting talents" within reach! If you can write station promos and commercial copy... provide a voice or two for the spots...or produce them...this makes you more valuable (and cost-efficient) for a corporate radio group.

Sadly..."voice-tracking" has become the substitution for genuine talent. I guess it's a little depressing for some of us (who now have limited ties to radio) watch a great form of communication slowly deteriorate?
