Paul McCartney to release standards album

On paper, this sounds kinda frightening. But Mac did put out a really good 50s/rockabilly-inspired album back in 1999, "Run Devil Run", which featured his close pal David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) on guitar. Included mostly cover tunes, the majority of them quite obscure. It wasn't a note-for-note exercise, he and his band left a very unique take on it. Probably his best album of the past two decades. It really rocks!

And yes, he did do a similar album for the Russian market about ten years earlier.

I assume this new album will be somewhat similar in nature, though I'm sure it's not going to be a rowdy rocker like "Run Devil Run". And I know that he's wary of venturing into Rod Stewart schmaltz territory. Sounds like it will be a bit more in the vocal jazz territory.

Over the years, I've worked with lots of rock and country performers, many of whom turn out to be very talented musicians in other genres of music. They just do the rock, pop or country stuff because it pays better. Sometimes they do well enough with what sells, that they occasionally get to do the kind of music they really like.

Wow, perhaps he might do something from "Music Man" maybe, like "Till there Was You".

I really like it. Very nice orchestration. Hope the rest of the album is this good.

EDIT: After further thought, I love that. Fantastic recording.

Funny! I wonder how many people got that one? ;D

With all respect, Paul's voice is a bit ragged these days, at his age it's to be expected. The last time I heard him sing live he was very raspy.

This isn't a surprising move, if you have listened to Paul's music you know he respects the standards.
