Paulino Bernal Evangelism........

No mention of Tyler. If they have a translator in Tyler, and it is in the commercial band, then they are required to derive the signal from an off air station or translator. I wonder where they claim they are getting the signal? Satellite delivery for a commercial band translator is specifically not permitted. It is OK in the reserved (educational) band. In fact, that's the reason for the "off air" requirement, to prevent huge networks of satellite fed translators from cropping up.

Whether you agree with that rule or not (I must admit I have mixed feelings about it) it seems that it is seldom taken seriously.

Well, I listened just before 5PM CST today. Heard a TOH ID, but there were no calls mentioned. It was something like "94.3 FM Stereo serving the hispanic community of Tyler, Texas...". It was not in stereo and had a hum in the background like it was receiving an unbalanced audio signal. It was not pretty.

I'm wondering if this isn't a pirate. Reason being, I listened for something that might identify it as being Paulino Bernal, but didn't pick up on anything. It was like it was a home-grown operation. Interesting, to say the least.

Thoughts?

It is certainly interesting. The Paulino Bernal people seem to be very big on ID's. It probably helps them get donations, so I'm thinking it isn't them. I had a listener in Longview tell me that there seems to be a pirate around the Pine Tree area running in the educational band. I don't know what frequency it is. I think they thought it was 87.3, but who knows? I don't always believe everything that someone calls in and tells me. I get some really odd phone calls a the station.

It seems that radio in East Texas is quite a spectator sport. ;)
