(Pause)...WBZ

I was aware he did it from listening to him on Sunday mornings. It really doesn't bother me. I think a little pause on an all talk/news staion every now and then is not the worst thing in the world.

I thought he paused because he was afraid he would say WEEI but I was told by someone who knows that it it is due to a speech impediment. He actually has the call letters recorded and fires them from time to time.

He is an excellent anchor but I have seen him throw major hissy fits and go off on young producers for minor things on more than one occasion.

I miss some of the old BZ guys like Art Gardner, Darayll Gould, Steve Smith, Don Batting and Bill Watson. Is Jim Mittchell still on BZ?

Actually...Bob's pregnant pause could be a way to annoy listeners while getting the WBZ call letters out.......

OR

He's just doing the best he can NOT to fall asleep at the microphone! :p

There must be a cruel joke behind creating calls signs that begin with "W". Canada has "C", America left "K", Mexico "X".. we have "W" ? The ONE letter of the alphabet with the MOST syllables? So many announcers have trouble saying "W" properly, poor Bob McMahon must need that pause to reconfigure his mouth to get that pesky "W" out properly. I'd almost rather hear a blathering "bubbayou" that the pause though.. now that dhoule has drawn my attention to it - it drives me nuts !

I caught this bit of idiocy this morning, and immediately switched to my iPod. The pregnant pause before 'WBZ' was utterly and completely unlistenable and irritating. If a consultant or some quote-unquote 'expert' told him to do this, it's Exhibit A why consultants and said 'experts' ought to be sent to the bottom of the ocean along with lawyers.

Chris in NH....

The only way lawyers and consultants will remain at the bottom of the ocean is if their feet are attached to one or two of those 50-pound solid iron round balls! This way neither the lawyers nor the broadcast consultants can possibly come up for air?

Otherwise...certain members of the broadcast police...along with the great great grandson of NIPPER (the RCA Victor wonderdog) are sure to fish them out of the water! :p

Uggggh. This "...................dubbuya BEE ZEE' idiocy was on again yesterday. Not only is there that utterly annoying pause before the call letters, but he can't even pronounce the call letters properly. It's almost like the pause is to prepare him for the mighty task of saying 'Double-U-Bee-Zee' like a normal person does. Except he fails.

Totally annoying. Totally unlistenable.

Has anyone else noticed that since this post first appeared his PAUSE has increased.
Perhaps, he reads this board and it just tweeking the noses of those who brought up the topic about ........................................................................................................................W BZ ;)

I have not noticed an increase in the pause, what I have noticed is his inability to say the letter "W" clearly. Before I didn't notice the butchering of the pronunciation, just the pause.

I still say every third word on WBZ does not have to be "WBZ"

I feel bad for the people within the four walls on Soldiers Field Road who have to--yes, HAVE to--listen to it.

GOOD! Then he knows what a TOOL he is for sounding like he does.

The US is assigned "W" call signs (along with K, N and part of the A series) by international treaty, stemming from radio's earliest days. The radio operators of roughly 100 years ago used call signs prefixed with "W," which stood for "wireless," to distinguish themselves from telegraph stations which used a number followed by two letters to identify themselves.

The pause is definitely increasing. ???

Heard the pause yesterday.. something's seriously wrong. Hope Bob is OK. At first I thought it was a quirk, but now his struggle to say "W" is increasing. I hope it's not throat cancer or something. Kudos to WBZ management for keeping him on despite this issue.

Regardless of the pause, I think McMahon still sounds good on the air, more personable than Greg Jensen, who I think is horrible. His "sing-song" newsreading and the way he runs sentences together, placing the emphasis to the middle of a sentence, really really bugs me.

Greg needs to spend more time listening to Ed Walsh to learn what a newsreader should sound like! Ed is very good, smooth pipes, unflappable...I think 'BZ hit a home run naming Walsh as the morning anchor.

Greg definitely has a unique delivery, similar to a Paul Harvey. I admit, though, that it does wear on my after awhile.

I do have to agree that the new 'BZ morning guy made me say, 'Gary WHO?' pretty quickly. he's very good. Which is to say, he doesn't bring any baggage or annoying quirks to the table.

Is it me or has this gotten worse in recent days/weeks? I recall almost a garble on the double u as of late.
Though what is tough to say is WBZ ME-TEE-OR-OL-O-GIST Blah Blah Blah.
