PAWN STARS VS. HARDCORE PAWN (WHICH IS BETTER?)

I liked Pawn Stars when it first came out but.......How many times have we heard the bald guy
say "I gotta get my hands on this"? He comes across to me as someone who probably got through
History class by the seat of his pants, yet today he's a walking encyclopedia (ditto the rust lover on
American Pickers). I think the scripted and staged segments attempt to make Pawn Stars better but they actually take away from it. To be a walking encyclopedia they sure have to call in the experts a lot.

Hardcore Pawn has a lot more customer drama. They seem to present the good and the ugly without
a staged, drawn out History lesson. I'm not a regular fan of either show, but Hardcore seems more
real (less staged) and easier to stomach.

Well, they are both television shows. For the record, the guys on the show (Pawn Stars) don't work in the store any more. They only show up to do the TV show. We were out there last year and just happened to be near the store, so we went there. The security guard was probably too talkative. Someone in line asked if the actors/owners were there that day. He laughed and said no, they're just actors now.

While I've watched a few episodes, I'm not a fan. Like so much of reality TV, it's...TV. People like it, so why not? Someone said they read where the bald guy, now that he's rich, actually keeps a lot of the goods he purchases on the show.

Interesting... Thanks for the post

When I stopped at the Pawn Stars store about a year and a half ago, the security guard at the door (not the one on TV) said it takes about 45 minutes to shoot each segment, so it may not be scripted but there must be plenty of retakes. He said the History Channel only uses about half of the segments they shoot.

A section of the store (which they never show on TV) is souvenirs. The store isn't very big, and it's always filled with tourists, so I wonder how many actual pawn customers they have these days.

Hardcore Pawn probably is more "real"... but the show is always the same: brother and sister fight like cats and dogs, dad gets excited and yells.

This was brought up in an earlier thread, but Pawn Stars is staged to the point of lining up the items that will be sold and scheduling the sellers to come in on the day of filming. That would also explain why they're able to come up with the history on the items that are being sold. On American Pickers they probably do something similar in lining up the visits and at least have some knowledge of the major items they'll be looking at.

According to Rick Harrison's book, "License to Pawn", they had to give up working the front counter full-time, not only due to confidentiality reasons for customers who pawn their items (all but a few items on the show so far were sales, not pawns), but also due to constant distractions from fans that visit the Gold and Silver. For that reason, they now work largely behind-the-scenes, coming out only to shoot the show and, on occasion, for photo-ops.

Personally, I watch both "Pawn Stars" and "Hardcore Pawn" religiously, though I agree that the latter is a more realistic -- though American Jewelry has no qualms about showing pawns to a nationwide audience.

As for Pawn Stars' spinoff, "Cajun Pawn Stars" -- I do watch it when (and recently, "if") new episodes come on , but it does not hold up well, as compared to the Vegas original.

I watch "Pawn Stars" a lot, and I've only seen promos for "Hardcore Pawn", but it seems like "Hardcore Pawn" has an angry, unappealing feel to it. Rick, Corey, Chumlee, and the Old Man play off each other quite well.

I really like Pawn Stars, watched Hardcore Pawn a little bit, but that show reminds me of American chopper a bit (and not in a good way).

I'd have to say Pawn Stars is the better show, Though their Cajun spinoff is not as good, in fact it kinda sucks.

I'm sure a lot of the "info and history" (but not all) is filmed at another time and edited into the program. They would not stop the production to run get a photo of George Washington to insert.

I watch them both and I am sure they are both staged, but I like "Hardcore Pawn" better... Although it is staged I can see a lot of what HP shows as being more realistic with the exception of all the bitching and moaning which I am sure is done to juice the show up... CC

I'm not sure which is actually better. I guess if I have to pick I would choose Pawn Stars over Hardcore Pawn because of less yelling and censor bleeps overall. Hearing lots of shouting and constant bleeps on HP gets old faster than seeing Chumlee doing dumb things around the PS shop imo.

I think some of the IDIOTS who try to pi.....err.....pawn stuff on Hardcore Pawn tend to play up to the cameras when they don't get their way

Then too, I suppose the same could be said for the other shows like it on TruTV too, so.....

Cheers & 73 ;D

HCP is based on a family-run business & like every American family, it has a sibling rivalry ;D

Same for "Pawn Stars", which is also family owned hand has some rivalry between family members, but nowhere as intense as Hardcore Pawn.
