Pawn Stars

While watching this show do you ever wonder why people are bringing items to a Pawn Shop knowing they will be low-balled on price whereas they could do EBAY and possibly do better. Do the people they use on the show get any sort of compensation from the producers?

Does anyone else agree that "History" is really bad branding for this network? They've tried to sell it with "History made everyday", however, it ain't workin' with me.

Good point Frank.

I personally would like to know what "Ice Road Truckers" have to do with history?

Perhaps because of the addition of "History International" the "History Channel" has run out of World War II programs.

I mean how much of Hitler can one stand after a while? ::)

I love this show. Really well produced, and the guys are real characters.

Regarding the price thing, I've always traded in my cars rather than sold them independently. I could make more money selling it myself, but the CONVENIENCE of having someone else deal with it is worth it to me. So I imagine that's part of it. I always find it interesting when the customer walks away, because that's always an option. But the lure of quick and easy money often trumps the knowledge that they could have made more money selling it themselves. Especially in Vegas.

As for the shows in History, it's part of a trend. Used to be these channels were like radio formats, and they never diverged from the topic. But then a few discovered big ratings by broadening their base. Maybe radio should learn something from cable and play music outside the narrow format.

Given their climb in the ratings, it's working for a good portion of the audience.

People pawn stuff all over America every day. Add in the possibility of being on tv, in Las Vegas where people want gambling money and tanked-economy money, and there's a niche for Pawn Stars. Even though it's not history on The History Channel.

If you're in a situation where you're needing to pawn/sell something, odds are that you don't know how to sell something on the internet, don't have the equipment to "do it right," and/or don't want to bother trying hard to squeeze out its maximum value [you would rather have the one bird in the hand than two in the bush, that kind of thing].

I don't know if they get any compensation for appearing, but there are crowds in that place in the background A LOT. A couple of times they have said how many transactions Rick or The Old Man's done, and it's seems like it was in the several hundreds a week, just by their self.

if you want to stretch the point...many of the items being sold are historical...

I like the show also. I would think the people get some kind of money for appearing. Hey, if my diamond ju ju beads turned out to be fake on national TV and made me look dumb.....I'd want
some money for it.

I only watched once, but a guy took in a loan document signed by John Hancock. The owner of the shop was skeptical because of the shaky signature, but the expert authenticated it as John Hancock's signature for a loan in hard times.

The guy left with his authentic document too, because he didn't get enough.

Hard to imagine anyone is still going to e-Bay to sell anything, but I guess they are.

Hey...you want to be famous? Or you want money? Same deal as working in radio.

Sometimes the pawn shop guys look dumb too, so the characters aren't all one-dimensional. Like last night a guy brought in some NASA photos and negatives from the moon. Or so he thought. It turned out to be a mass-produced media kit from Apollo 17, but Rick didn't notice that the "negatives" weren't in reversed colors, the astronaut suits were white, the sky was black, etc just like usual. They ragged on him a little, and a good time was had by all, even though the media kit wasn't worth as much as some negatives that had been on the moon. They also seem to get bailed out on deals by their restoration guys when they overpay someone for their beat-up old "classic" cars and soda machines and such.

They have a lot of people who will get their stuff appraised by an "expert" at say, $4000 dollars, then they expect the pawn shop to pay $4000 for it. It's like they never ever watched Antiques Roadshow! ??? ??? ;D

A bunch of the stuff the people Pawn are from years ago such as 1800s. Like old papers sign by important people. So it makes its history point of the show for The History Channel.

As we know History is owned by A&E which that network needs a whole new name. A&E goes from showing Parking Wars then CSI: Maimi. Some of those shows need to move to tru TV I believe.

Tru TV has already got a pawn shop show called Hardcore Pawn. The shop is from Detroit, Michigan near 8 Mile Road. It's okay for what it is. However, all the yelling, screaming, and the mass amount of censor bleeps in that show really annoys me so I'll stick with Pawn Stars.

I agree that trucker shows doesn't belong on History, unless it's one of those Modern Marvels episodes about truckers. Modern Marvels deals with history, unlike Ice Road Truckers which it rarely does.

What you've described is precisely why I can watch American Pickers without much guilt, but Pawn Stars makes you want to take a shower. Those fat schlubs are ripping people off!

How so?
They kinda have to make a profit. They're not going to sell everything they buy at the most fantastical, highest auction price.
Plus, people can say "No."

That show Hardcore Pawn is just to compete with Pawn Stars. Both air on Monday night at 10pm.
Neither of which I will watch at that time because I'll be watching The Event on NBC :D

That said though, HP is repeated again on Wednesday Nights. I'll catch it then.

Cheers :D

History reairs Pawn Stars Monday I believe.

Not to get off topic but I didn't know The Event went up head to head with Hawaii Five O on Monday's at 10.
