PAY TO PLAY

So, maybe you read about this already.... maybe not...

"Should radio pay a performance royalty? Radio listeners and newspaper readers in the D.C. are hearing the NAB's side of the story (namely, "no"), in a series of ads ads through Wednesday. See the print ad that's appearing in Roll Call, The Politico and Congress Daily here. The record labels say that American radio's exemption from a performance royalty costs their artists money both in the U.S. and abroad. "

Heres the link for the ad...

I would love to find out exactly who these LABELS are. I am not saying this is some bogus article.... but it would be nice to OUT these labels. Let these labels know that if they want radio to PAY TO PLAY...then we wont PAY. Simple as that. Labels need to realize...once and for all...you dont bite the hand that feeds YOU.

Where exactly do LABELS think there money comes from? If it wasn't for radio...they would not make ANY MONEY! It becuz of radio that people buy music, or go to concerts or even know about any of the above! No radio play...no concerts. No radio play...no purchase of music. No radio play... NO ARTIST PROMOTION!

I know I am saying something that EVERYONE here knows etc.... I just dont get that mindset. I understand being money-hungry etc... but this is just bizzare thinking. This math does not add up.

and yes... I know that the internet has changed things up....but it still comes back to radio.

This is an intersting topic. I have yet to read the article, but it's bound to come to this sooner or later.
When you consider the way the consumer buys music in this day and age; there is less and less revenue paid to the artists on direct pos purchases. The labels are obviously reaching for the mighty dollar. Another example,so to speak, is concert attendance or rather LIVE performances. I remember a time when a really big show would come to town and stations would get tons upon tons of "gimme" tickets...not so the case anymore. ZZTop will be in Lubbock this weekend and I had to change the message on my voice mail to direct friends and mild aqaintances to the number for Select-A-Seat to get their tickets...still, there are those that think we get all the tickets we want. Hell, people inside the station are extremely lucky to get one ticket, much less a pair. We will se where all this goes.

Small wonder. With Cd sales down every year, it was a matter of time before they started to panic and charge radio. The thinking is with technology the way it is,listeners wil lrecord of fthe radio as well. ( Gosh how many of you have done that growing up?) The Royalty folks are in a panic rather than embracign new ways to sell it. Charging radio will hemrohage their industry. Thats what ascap and BMI is for.
