This is hilarious. Senator Feingold asks the FCC for an update on its payola investigations. And I quote: “Radio listeners should not have to worry whether a song was played because the station manager got a free laptop, or because the station’s parent company is producing the artist’s upcoming concert,” he adds. “I look forward to hearing from Chairman Martin about his efforts to end abuse of our public airwaves.”
Don't misunderstand me. Payola is wrong; it's illegal. No debate.
And I'm not accusing Senator Feingold of anything, but let's look at Capitol Hill. Millions upon millions of dollars in campaign contributions from special interests... and more millions upon millions spent on lobbyists... plus scandal after scandal, year after year... and Congress sets itself up as a moral authority?
Give me a break.
Do they really think that radio listeners "worry" because a song is played because the station manager got a free laptop? Might the American public be more "worried" that their elected representatives are passing laws contrary to the public interest because these Senators and Congressmen are getting sweet deals under the table?
I would never condone payola. Seriously. But I am disgusted at the feigned outrage that these jokers in Washington adopt, simply because it makes them look like the guardians of the little people.
These gypsies, tramps, and thieves inside the Beltway get to turn up the dimmer switch on their phony halos while the rest of us in radio get a good old-fashioned black eye.
