PBS To Add Breaks...

I like this. I've thought for years that the single 6 minute break going into the top of the hour on PBS was more annoying than the multiple 3 and 4 minute breaks we see on CBS and NBC.

I remember "back in the day" when breaks on PBS between shows were only a couple of minutes tops.

Seems like a good idea. I know sometimes on the news it is awkward to go from a story
about moon travel to one about a sewer collapse in New Jersey.

They can read the handwriting on the wall. Their Federal subsidies will be coming to an end
sooner or later. This is a logical proactive step, as irritating as it may be.

You would rather have the show you're watching get interrupted multiple times rather than to just walk away when it ends and come back 6 minutes later for the next show? That doesn't make much sense...

What's the point of PBS if it's going to have commercials?

1) They're not commercials. They are funding announcements. Very different. No singing jingles, No screaming announcers.

2) The programming is still very distinct from commercial TV.

Apparently PBS SoCal is running commercials...I have seen Honda ads that are the same as run on commercial channels.

I hear "spots" on noncom radio stations all the time. As long as they are written with the correct language there's no problem.

As long as the programming fits the "educational" remit for PBS, I'm not really bothered by these added break periods to shows like "Newshour". With regards to "Nova", I haven't really watched since they began tweaking with the format some years ago. I know, extended documentary-type bits on one scientific or intellectual subject does tend to drag, but I've come to expect that. I think there's a companion program called "Nova ScienceNOW" which is bit more segmented, and I guess that fits the bill for adding more break time. As for "Antiques Roadshow", if there's going to be a companion program for that, well, count me out...not a big fan anyway...

Of course, this is all moot anyway, since individual PBS affiliates still pick and choose programming from the national feed. Most of them don't even follow the main network schedule...
