PBS To Mark ‘Mister Rogers’ 50th Anniversary

Note although Mister Rogers started out as an NET show it became one of PBS's iconic childrens show.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Michael Keaton is narrating a 50th anniversary tribute to the late Fred Rogers and his beloved children’s program, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

“Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like” will air March 6 on PBS and includes celebrity admirers sharing their memories of the show that debuted Feb. 19, 1968.

Judd Apatow, Whoopi Goldberg, Sarah Silverman, John Lithgow and Esperanza Spalding are among those discussing how the show inspired them.

Famed musicians Yo Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman, who appeared on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” also are featured. Cast members Joe Negri (Handyman Negri) and David Newell (Mr. McFeely) share personal stories about Rogers, as does Joanne Rogers, his widow.

A young Michael Keaton (then Douglas) worked as a stagehand on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, so he is an excellent choice.

Joe Negri was recently interviewed in one of our local papers. He is 91, and still sharp as a tack.
He still plays some jazz guitar gigs around town.

Fred Rogers actually worked on a KDKA-TV childrens show called The Childrens Corner before developing the show we all know and love as MisteRogers on the CBC in Toronto. Later he brought it to WQED.

I'll try and catch this. Looks like a nice tribute to Fred Rogers and how his show influenced millions of young kids over 4 decades of episodes and reruns. And speaking of the CBC, Mr. Dressup had a similar approach to Mister Rogers with the puppets, but premiered a year before. Ernie Coombs' show aired for decades on CBC and reruns aired until 2006. I'm sure in the Seattle area, there were times where KCTS aired Mister Rogers at the same time as CBUT airing Mr. Dressup. There were some American kids that watched Ernie's show.

Yes, I remember Mr. Dressup from my time living in the Detroit area where we got some Canadian TV.

I can't be absolutely sure but I seem to recall reading someplace that he and Fred Rogers
worked together at the CBC.

Update Tom Hanks Will play Mr. Rogers in a Film to be produced in 2019

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood for Tom Hanks, who’ll star as Mister Rogers in the upcoming biopic “You Are My Friend.”

TriStar Pictures announced Monday it has acquired worldwide rights to the film, to be directed by “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” filmmaker Marielle Heller.

The film will focus on the friendship between the host of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and journalist Tom Junod. Junod reluctantly agreed to profile Fred Rogers only to find “his perspective on life transformed.”

Production will begin in September, with a 2019 release expected.

The role will surely add to the America’s Dad image of Hanks, who gave a very Rogers-like opening monologue while hosting “Saturday Night Live” before the 2016 presidential election, swapping his jacket for a sweater and giving America a pep talk.
