PD at KWNR out?

Not just a rumor, it's a fact. I guess they had to blame somebody for the horrific ratings. IMO they already ruined KWNR before Rik was named PD. What a great station it once was.

You are correct. I think the listeners and the advertising community in Vegas have lost all interest in KWNR. The only time I hear people talking about the station, is when we talk about it in this forum. Might it be time for Clear Channel Las Vegas to create some excitement in their cluster by launching a new format? And do it right (free of voice tracking and premium choice)! Anything is better than 95.5's current position. I think we all know it's done and time to move on.

What if Clear Channel Las Vegas does what Clear Channel LA is doing and create a cluster targeted to women with a Hot AC station on 95.5. This would give them the full spectrum females on their stations... Sunny (AC) 45-64 women. 95.5 (Hot AC) 25-44 women. 93.1 (top 40) 18-34 women. I think this would give them a great selling feature, opposite of Lotus' ownership of men in Vegas. As we know, advertisers want females and creating the perception of "owning women" would be a strong strategy.

I don't think KWNR will drop Country anytime soon. There is too much pride involved. They are not going to let Beasley have the only country station.

If they tried the wall of women idea it would be nothing like the huge success in Los Angeles. Yes KSNE is LVs version of KOST but that's where the similarities end. KIIS is a #1 rated and billing megastation with decades of heritage. KPLV is the lowest rated Top 40 station in a market oversaturated with the format.

If KWNR went Hot AC they would not become KBIG. There already is a huge Hot AC here with KMXB and with all their heritage would be difficult to make a dent in...especially because unlike your suggestion there is a 100% chance they would heavily use voicetracking and premium choice. That's just the way CC does radio. They can get away with it in several markets but not so much here for some reason.

If KWNR dumped country and KCYE picked up KWNR's 2.4 share added on to their 4.1, they would be #2 with 6.5, giving Beasley three of the top five stations. CC won't let that happen.

That's not correct. It doesn't work like that. KCYE would maybe pick up a share if KWNR flipped. In addition, this is an abnormally good time for the Country format in Vegas. Since PPM began, there has been only about 5 shares of Country rather than the 6 there are now. Meaning that KCYE would be in the 5 share range. But in any event, you are probably all correct. Natalie (GM) is too attached and proud to flip KWNR. But that doesn't mean there is room in Vegas for 2 Country stations.

Exactly.

While over a third of the KWNR listeners already listen to KCYE, there are a bunch of other stations that 30% or better of the KWNR cume also uses: KXPT, KSNE, KKLX, KMXB and KXTE are among those. And there are about 5 more that share between a fifth and a third of the KWNR cume.

KCYE might, as you say, get a full share. But likely it would get somewhat less, as 60% of existing KWNR listeners don't use KCYE and would probably just spread their radio listening among their other favorites.

Besides, country is ALREADY a female-leaning format.

Actually, if you combine KCYE and KWNR, the listenership is almost exactly 50% each for male and female listening.

I know KCYE wouldn't pick up the entire share of KWNR... but when KWNR became the only country station years ago, they went up 2.4 shares, while KFMS had a 3.2 before they flipped to CHR, so they apparently got most of it. And according to Duncan, KWNR's sales increased by 46% from 1999 to 2000.

David, thanks for putting all the old Arbitron & Duncan info on your website. It's fascinating to look up numbers from years ago.
