PD at WGCI music editing

I was reading a past post about the song "Laffy Taffy" being butchered at GCI.
You know, if Elroy Smith has such a problem with playing certain songs, maybe he needs to quit his job. But you know he isn't going to do that since he is making all of that money.
To me, it doesn't make sense to OVEREDIT songs like Elroy sometimes does. The reason why is, I can listen to Kiss 103.5, B-96 or Power 92 and hear the SAME song WITHOUT the annoying edits. So what good does it do? Listeners are going to hear it anyway.
Elroy needs to realize WGCI is not Radio Disney and that grown folks listen to the station as well. If people have such a problem with their kids listening to certain music, TURN OFF THE RADIO AND STOP BUYING THEM THE CRAP!!!!
Besides, he is programming for Chicago, NOT Salt Lake City, Utah.
What does everyone think?

He won't be leaving. He won't be fired. He is always PD of the year. WGCi is usually station of the year.
Funny, huh.

All I have to say is, EVERY dog has its day!! I am not saying Elroy isn't somewhat of a good PD, I just think sometimes he has been WAY OFF on the decisions he has made.
The only reason why GCI even gets the numbers is because of its involvement in the African-American community, it isn't necessarily the music. WGCI has had a long history in Chicago with informing the black community of things that affect them that no other music station in the market has done. They (WGCI) recently did a benefit for the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and they frequently "Stop the Hits" and they talk about issues such as HIV/AIDS in the black community, police treatment of African-Americans, etc. That is why I think they are still on top, because if it was just based on the music alone, they would have fallen in the ratings long ago.

That's why I dont listen to WGCI because they are Boring!

I wouldn't call it boring, I actually think it makes it more interesting to tune in, just to see where Elroy will strike next. I actually commend him for having the guts to edit some of the blatantly derogatory and degenerate lyrics that make up half of today's mainstream urban music. He's holding his ground while standards and decency it seems are a has-been at a lot of stations.

Agree...and maybe that is the reason they are getting the upper demos and getting the billing in the market (remember, they are #2 in billing behind WGN).

maybe Edger urban station?

But do you guys think its time for Chicago to have a more edger urban station like-- nyc's Hot97 & Power1051? Also do you think a station like hot97 and power1051 would work?

I don't know if you've ever heard either of those stations rectently, but they are wack! East coast Hip Hop is so damn boring right now imo. But I'm a Southern Hip Hop junkie, so I could be a bit biased.

But by being on the East coast twice this year, I was bored.

You want edgy/risky? Hot 107.1 Memphis. And they been just RIPPING it up during the old school lunch mix so hard!!

What I'd love to hear is more old school Southern Hip Hop.. some of that old smooth songs like:

Outkast "Southernplayalistkcadillacmusik"
Goodie Mob "Black Ice"
Ghetto Mafia "On the Grind."
or Master P "I Got the Hook Up"

That's just some ol' crusin music.

Even that new Juvenile "Rodeo" is smooth. We forget that there is more than crunk that came/comes from the South. But the North still don't acknowledge the South. Pretty Ricky "Age Aint Nothin But a Number" is coo, and it's R&B. O well... but I'm just an armchair MD.

But to be honest, what good does it do if I can hear it somewhere else? It isn't as if WGCI is the only musicial outlet out there.
Besides, it is pointless to even play some songs if Elroy is just going to cut the crap out of them. I am not saying he has to agree with the songs, but when you are in a business you have to play what the people want. The REAL power shows in the almighty dollar when the public doesn't support that type of music anymore.

Like I said before, I don't think it is necessarily the MUSIC, it is the community service to African-Americans that listen to the station.

Dissappointed

Did I spell That right? I hope I did...
*smile*

Okay, pumpin' ... let me just say I am dissappointed by your outlook... WGCI is the bomb b/c black people listen? Is that your arguement. That had better not be your real arguement... Have you been to Hoffman estates? Downers grove? Schaumberg? Flossmoor? Homewood? Cicero? You know what those places all have incommon... a caucasion population... Lincoln Park? Humbolt park? Chicago Heights? they have a latino population... B96 wasn't always a top 40 Rhy. In fact I can almost remember when it swiched over... so if that's me can you imagine how many people GCI was servicing. Those people are still alive and spending.

You know we're in radio where the person who best services the listener wins?
yeah.. I know you knew that. GCI did it best and still does it better. That's the bottom line. Not only that, but what do the words Day Parting mean to you.

I feel like the only people who understand that concept sometimes are Urban stations. They are very unique in that it can almost sound like an entirely different station periodically... that is so dope! Service the listener... and you'll win. Stop thinking color and start thinking age rage. As far as being like someone else... Hot 97 etc. This is Chicago Baby. We set trends here.

Happy new year

With all due respect Shygirl, I NEVER said WGCI was only supported by African-Americans. What I said was, they garner the ratings because of the community events that they do primarily for their African-American listeners. I am VERY aware that Urban stations get crossover listeners, but they still have a core audience that is all that I am getting at.
The point I was trying to make was, any urban station can play urban music but not all of them are successful for one reason or another. All I was saying is that WGCI is a good station, but don't think their success is primarily because of the music, there are other factors: the history of the station itself, their involvement in community causes, "stopping the hits" when something happens that they feel it is important to be talked about with the listeners, etc. Shygirl, you have to realize not every station around the country is like WGCI, they are not as involved in the community. I just don't agree with a lot of the editing of some of the songs that they play because to me it is pointless. If you can hear it somewhere else, why would I tune into your station?
If Elroy Smith and his staff weren't into the community involvement and just depended on the music, WGCI would be lower in the ratings game, even with the crossover audience.
Shygirl, I was by no means dissing my caucasian and latino brothers and sisters, I was just talking about what WGCI does for its core listeners.

I don't know about POWER 105.1 but HOT 97 is definitely much more edgy than anything Chicago has.
HOT 97 is a huge power house station and the envy of many a hip, hop station.
Chicago has a more conservative attitude in general. A station like HOT may be a hard sell.
______________

I would disagree that Chicago has a conservative attitude, it is programmers like Elroy Smith of WGCI that are conservative, NOT CHICAGO!!!!!!

Progammers in general tend to be probably more conservative than they would like in order to produce a "safe" product to radio listeners. It's risky to go outside the mainstream.
Chicago, however is not a cutting edge city in any aspect so it's NOT feasable that a station would likely plunge into a more cutting edge, eclectic playlist, especially when a station like GCI has the numbers and revenue it does.
______________
