From All Access:

Kevin O'Neal Out At KCYE
ALL ACCESS has confirmed that BEASELEY Country KCYE (COYOTE COUNTRY)/LAS VEGAS PD KEVIN O'NEAL has exited after just two months on the job. We'll have more on this one as it breaks.

Let's see, it was 42 days for the first guy. Kevin was apparently there only slightly longer. And I note the new morning guy has been moved to afternoons anad the afternoon guy has been moved to mornings. Sounds like Beasley has some serious problems at that place.

I'm hearing from somebody at Beasley that Tom Kelly will be the new PD. They want the morning's host to be the PD as they do at Star. Official word to be out late Friday.

Poor Tom. That means he'll be gone in about two months too.

The Las Vegas Sun is reporting that Beasley may have bought KDWN and will be changing it to the old KJUL format. Seems to me they have enough problems on their hands, but then again they couldn't make KDWN worse than it already is.

Re: Tom Kelly Will Be PD

You CAN'T make KDWN any worse. Turning the signal completely off would be an improvement. If that rumor is true, I would love to see a true news/talk in Vegas...Does Beasley have any N/T expertise?

You could play polka music on KWDN and get a larger share than they have now.

Yes, Beasley has some N/T experience, although I think WQAM-Miami is mostly sports now. But why should that matter? Beasley had country expertise too, but still managed to fumble the launch of a new country station in Las Vegas.

That's a funny question. "Does Beasley have any N/T expertise" The better question is "Does Beasley have ANY expertise"...... in anything? I hear the price for KDWN is in the $20 mil range. I don't care what they do with it......how do you justify that kind of price? It's an AM for god's sake! The demos will be older and the Beasley Las Vegas sales team is only interested in selling younger demos. I hope they buy this turkey....They will have a new PD every few months. This will be fun to watch.

It's too early to tell if the Coyote launch was "botched". The Jan. trend exprap was great. If this were to hold up, there could be a real horse race in Las Vegas country. KWNR is dropping a good month in the next two trends....Coyote is dropping two low numbers. Let's see what happens. I think this is going to turn out to be a marketing and tactical battle. I think it might wind up looking like Portland with KUPL and The Wolf going back and forth. Time will tell. There hasn't been enough time yet.

Beasley buying KDWN

If Beasley buys KDWN and switches them to Adult Standards they should keep Pete Moss on board. I think Pete would make the best Standards host ever. He knows the music and knows everything that ever happened in pop culture in the olden days. He would have a story for every song he plays.

Tru Hawkins could also do the Standards format, in fact he used to do weekends at the old 104.3 KJUL. I would miss his talk show since I generally agree with everything he says. But it wouldn't be a big loss since most of the time he's hosting some snake oil salesman's infomercials. Maybe he could still do that, afterall I would fully expect Beasley to run plenty of infomercials on KDWN, even if they did flip to standards. They would almost have to run infomercials, especially if they pay $20 million for the station. As hehaw69 said, that's a lot of money for a Vegas AM.

I agree that its too early to know if the launch was botched, however
the station needs a lot of tweeking.
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. the morning show needs work, they are very bland and it sounds as
if the show prep depends on what happened on t.v. the night before.
I think a little edgeier would work,
so do some bits,be funny and informative, above all
prepare,prepare,prepare.
2. The Cayote imaging is terrible.
3. The commericials are inconsistant in sound and placement, remember the spot
is an intregal part of your overall sound.
4. The talent is good, not great, but the young lady in mid-days could be
a fantastic country radio talent,I do think she needs a bit of coaching
because its evident that she has not worked the format before and that
facet can be taken care of over time.
5. Last but not least, this is market 38 if the Cayote or any other station here
begins to act like it,they will have a winner.

This long winded thing is just one mans opinion and subject to review at any
time, particulary this early in the morning...My cat woke me up.
thanks all for your time.

Less than 5 months on air. Already on the second morning show and soon the third PD. Looks like it was botched to me. That's not to say they can't recover from it, but a good operator would have done it right to begin with.

This is market #32, not #38. And based on the growth, it will move into the Top 30 next time Arbitron does market rankings. So why does radio here sound like market #256?
