PD's -Who is the best?

A

We've talked about the best and the worst owners in the market....Anyone care to nominate their choice of the best PD's in the market? (and why?)

well - let's see -

1) Which Market? and which Decade?

Portland (now) - Randi Kirshbaum is easy going and knowledgeable; Stan Manning gets lots of glowing reviews from folks who work with him; Tim Moore is more than a survivor, especially handling multiple stations and riding out the whole who-owns-who-this-week thing. All three get props from me. Apologies for any omissions, as there are a few

Portland (90's) - That Jon Holiday guy earned his paycheck at a CHR Flamethrower, as did Tom Hennessey at the Country Giant. Dean Rogers was driving the bus for TWO stations in the early part of that decade; and Herb Ivy not only programmed a kick-azz station, but managed to survive the Persky Experience (not a negative, by the way).

Portland (80's) - A certain loco-poster who is on occasion known to chug down his own tracks ran a couple of very lean & mean, full-service operations in the 80's (okay - it's ME, all right?); Peter Falconi assumed control of the the ever-safe full-service AM signal in town (remember those? music - news - weather - and (gasp) personality?), but also had the honor of turning off the elevator and crankin' out the hits! Peter had assumed the full-service helm from a then up&coming Cary Pahigian (who made the "leap of the week" - from programming in Portland to programming in Philadelphia); Tom Hennessey was the undefeated, reigning champeen of Country; Dean Rogers was the man with two stations, although he assumed the helm of the 2nd one about midway through the decade; Dave Dean was the laid-back man-in-charge for a magical signal; and in the fringe-but-in category, Mike Lawrence not only handled WLAM expertly, but took the FM side from a Wave machine to a Kissing Booth.

Burlington VT (now and then): I hear lots of good things about "gentle Ben" (as we used to call him in Augusta). I hear little from Ben as he seemingly can't be bothered with answering emails from old workin' mates who actually aren't looking for a damn thing. i stopped trying a few years ago.

Great Ben story (which would warm the hearts of any GOOD PD!):
at WABK, Ben would begin each shift by removing the box from the studio's compression unit and cranking the settings until the fillings would be sucked out of his teeth (through his headphones), thereby giving him (at least) the impression that he had a "voice of God." Tim Smith (TimTron) took to placing the studio's mic compression/EQ unit into a "sealed" box which bore the label: Do Not Open Unless You ARE TimTron. Well, when you opened the "sealed box," and found the electronic's unit, the label on top of the box said :

"BEN: I SAID DO NOT OPEN THIS THIS - signed: TimTron"

true story.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. He shows little interest in his people when they leave. Hell, he usually trashes them. Yet, he has no problem invoking their names and taking credit for their careers.

Ben Hamilton and rules are like oil and water. Ask Saving Jane's manager (a former record rep...her name eludes me) about her conversation with Ben regarding her attempts to get a record added on the X, and his blatant disregard for FCC regulations.

Sounds vaguely reminscent of the Chappelle's Show clip of Rick James' testifying "What kind of man goes around grinding their feet in other people's couches?" only to immediately follow it up with "Yeah, I remember grinding my feet into Charlie Murphy's couch."

:D

C'mon...it's Saving Jane...I would need at least a 50" LCD TV for an add, too!!! KIDDING.

Without revealing the date of my birth certificate.....I can remember the days when BIG BEN HAMILTON was an intern at WGAN/AM 560! ::)

I think easily the best PD in the Market is the guy who does MP103. He came out of no where and brought life back to that company. I have been around the country and possibly the best varity hits station I have ever heard. Some funny imaging to. Sorry new to the market, I don't know anyone's names yet.

It's nice that JJ ("programmer" of MP103) has a girfriend now. JJ, you take care of Eve 1070 too, right? Good reminder for you huh? Y eah, nice work with that.
What does your new GF think of your attendance for that frequency?
Oh, she doesn't ever listen to that one either?

I know I’m just a high-functioning lummox but sir is the “girlfriend” you are referring to a metaphor for Eve 1070 Talk Radio for women? Or is it a literal (inflammatory) statement?

Either way a little mutual respect is in order.

Amen oh wise one.

As far as PD's go, JJ is one of the best in the business. He has taken MP103 from low in the books to being one of the top stations in this market. The man is a musical savant and does deserve respect.

I've heard rhythmic gold titles on MP103 that you will never hear anywhere else in the market. For a market overwhelmed with gold-based stations, they fill a prime niche.

The original string is about PD's not Selector crunchers. JJ don't qualify. PD's deal with lots of B>S> and by the way JJ ain't really a wiz when it comes to music rotation either. Mr Manno, point taken about playing nice in the sandbox but isn't this person yourre boss? and Fells what do you really know that some color dude ain't told ya about the playahs on the field? On youre way to Florida? Byeeeee! dont forget to include youre name at the end of the weather.
