PEACH 102.5 AND 96.5

What a suprise,CC is taking Peach back to the better closer signal to North Macon starting Monday. I think it is great and a great startion.
Wish Atlanta has this again.

You must like listening to a playlist consisting largely of "It's Raining Men", "Tainted Love", "Mony Mony" (Billy Idol), and "Young Turks" and some Tavares song- all of which are played every day!

I say CC needs to fire its PD and get more syndicated programming on Peach. It needs to lose some of the disco, get a wider playlist where there is more variety, and insert newscasts. At least on Peach we don't have to listen to Cumulus's ads about Henry Ford's lawyer Horse Rectum and Mr. Scripps.

102.5 in Warner Robins/Macon now goes by the WZCH call letters, according to Radio-Locator.com, and is broadcasting in Spanish, with the "VIVA" format, apparently.

Guess that precludes Georgia Eagle, K-LOVE (EMF), or even any other company, for that matter, from buying the station anytime soon. However, since the station is still operated under the "Aloha Trust", Clear Channel still must sell it, right? Does anybody know what's going on? ???

Glad Peach is back on 96.5. I've listened to it a few times while in the area and it was decent. Always was glad the "Peach" and WPCH calls were salvaged from the late Peach 94.9/Atlanta.

According to the stream and website, it's "Peach 96.5 and 102.5." So apparently they're simulcasting. Sounds pretty boring from what I've heard on the stream - they could at least get some more imaging or something. Music is mostly 70s with a little 60s and 80s. Are they playing any newer songs? I haven't been able to listen long since the switch.

wouldnt they be required to use the new calls if they did change? i still hear them say WPCH-FM Gray/Macon 96.5 & WEBL-FM Warner Robins 102.5

What exactly are you asking? new calls if they changed what?

You can call the station anything you wanted during the hour, heck, they could call it WABC if they wanted, as long as they ID is "WPCH Gray" and " WZCH Warner Robins" at the top of the hour.

And who says the ID you're hearing on one station is being heard on the air? 96.5 Could ID as "WPCH Gray Macon and WBEL Warner Robins" all it wanted, if theyre not simulcasting as long as 102.5 ID'd as WZCH Warner Robins"

I only mention that because there was an FM simulcast up in New England where the Originating full power signal in NW Metro Boston is repeated on a full power station in North Central Massachusetts and the Dual Station ID is only used on the full power station further west and not the "main" station.

Is the Peach still using the same consultant who worked for CC ?

It was a sad day in Macon Radio when they flipped the Buzz to the Peach though. One good thing is they eliminated alot of mediocre jocks though by pulling the plug on the buzz. The female I heard must have misspronounced at least 5 band names...

THat should've been

I liked the Buzz and miss it, too. It was always on my radio and I liked the music selection.

Today's consultants and/or brand managers make interesting music choices. For instance, Q106 would never have touched Phil Collin's "In the Air Tonight" in the early 80's. That was Top 40 stuff we played on FM99. I have always had a great respect and love for Q106. They have always stayed true to what they are and who listens. And, they've always promoted local bands.

Mr. Elder:
Q-106, oddly enough, played material like "In the Air Tonight". That is, in their incarnation as Z-106. They upped their wattage back in 1981 at their transmitter on Taylors Mill Road and gobbled a good portion of South Bibb's teenagers- and those south of Bibb. This likely scared WMAZ into hiring you. WMAZ/WAYS still had the flavor of an automated Top 40 station until well in the Eighties. That is, with a razor thin playlist which didn't touch anything that a housewife wouldn't listen to. Forget about Def Leppard or the Gap Band. Not until 1988 did Q-106 start playing "classic rock". By the time a "pure" Top-40 station took root in the form of an FM in the early 90's (B93.7), the format deteriorated into bubble-gum nonsense. WAYS did right in switching to oldies and I regret they gave up on them.

History's ironies.

Z-106/Q-106

The station didn't sign-on until early 1981 and they were a class A 3Kw FM. The signal wasn't upgraded to a C-2 50Kw FM until late 1990. The call letters came from a boat in Miami.

Mr. Elder made his debut on FM 99, WMAZ-FM on Monday, March 15, 1982, nearly one year after Z-106 hit the air. The decision to go live with Mr. Elder was simply brilliant. Ratings and revenue tell a tale of incredible success for the station, it's management, sales team and its owner Multimedia. Yeah, they were automated the rest of the day with a tight playlist, but no one gave them a run for the money in any daypart. Only with the horrific programming changes following the departure of Fred Newton and Oscar Leverette, did the once hot Top 40 station go from a 27 share to playing Sonny and Cher in just a few years. This station was driven into to the ground by an all over the road format disguised as CHR. Going Oldies was a white flag and not a sign of programming strength or smarts. Ironically, Fred and Oscar launched CHR B-93.7 WMGB Jeffersonville/Macon on Monday, September 27, 1993.

I agree with Daryll on this. The oldies numbers never even came close to the moderate ratings we had as a bad top 40 station. In our bad times we were pulling a 12 share. There were circumstances I can't discuss here that contributed to the bad top 40 badge. My comments on Q106 was about their AOR years and not Top 40. Sorry I wasn't more clear about that.

Most people don't know that I was offered a job in Little Rock at a Multimedia station to try to get me out of the Macon market. I turned it down. I was told by Oscar that my adult numbers were a concern to WMAZ, but I really don't think they lost any sleep over it. WNEX had gone more adult back then. Oscar was engineering the Big X as well as being employed at Multimedia. So, when Fred Newton was ready to do a "Jay Childs" at FM99, he was familiar with me from work I had done emceeing the local Addy Awards.

Oscar was dropping hints that live mornings were in the works. The rules were that I could call Fred and ask but he wouldn't call me and offer. So one morning Oscar came in the WNEX control room and said, "Today's the day to call Fred." Newton and I had lunch that day where we shook hands over a deal, after which I went back to WNEX and gave my "two weeks."

Paul Beliveau told me that after the lunch, Fred walked in his office, closed the door and said, "I think I just f***ed up. I just hired Elder." (LOL) I love this story! What prophetic words! But, a hire for which I will be forever grateful.

It's tough to know how brilliant someone is when you've known them your whole life. Oscar Leverette is one of those people. I've never met anyone who had the programming, engineering and public relations good sense like he did.

And you can't underestimate the News credibility and management expertise of Paul Beliveau. He was an incredible air talent in his own right.

It was one of those situations where the stars aligned to put in place an incredible group of people. But, as far as employee hires in the chain, I was the weakest link. This isn't false humility. I was never the reason for the success of FM99. That was already happening before I got there. I was kindly allowed to be a part in its success.
