Pending Doom For Talk 1200 In Boston

Rating are still below the Mendoza line for the Jeff Katz show on Talk 1200 - the branding change from Rush Radio to Talk 1200 isn't making a bit of difference.

Rumor has it that in the near future , Talk 1200 will do away with local news reports on Saturday mornings. No one is listening as it is.

My prediction is that afternoon news anchor George Brown will be the first to be let go , followed by Angela Andrerson - they will run Fox News only to save $$$$$$$.

Then finally they will cut strings with that blow hard in the morning and the station will flip formats.......

Again, Paula O'Connor was recently hired as PD and former TKK producer Eric Coldwell for Katz' show.
While it is possible they could still pull the plug, I would think they'd try to stick it out just to get
clearances for the CC shows. Maybe they would shop Rush to RKO or TKK and keep the other
shows. Are ratings low? Yup, incl for the older talk demo, but if they can make a slight profit
and get shows/ads aired, they may do it. Do they do better with Spanish? Fox Sports Radio (Premiere)? True Oldies? R&B? Maybe brokered time, offer shows to the folks doing pirate radio in the area. Touch 1200 anyone?

If they stay with it as long as they did prog. talk, that means it will be on till around summer of 2012
(2 yrs and 2 months: prog talk was 10/04 till 12/06) and there's an election shortly after that. Maybe
CC is making money with Kiss and Jam'n and 1200 can be a loss leader--subsidized by the big
money properties.

Branding change just happened, maybe too soon to tell. But if anything the PPMs are hurting
some formats and talk is one of them.

Katz, that 'blow hard in the morning', just won an AP award if that means anything.

I heard from a reliable source that they had to pay $$ to "win" that award... don't know if it is true or not, but that's what I heard.

They have a descent signal and we could use a good personal finance type format. Keep a local morning show geared toward finance, whether it's Katz or George Brown. Then move to shows like Clark Howard and Dave Ramsey for the middle of the day. Back to local in the afternoon with someone like Dave Anthony. After 7 or 8, they could move to Bloomberg throughout the night.

The signal isn't too bad in your car and maybe your home; not so sure about in workplaces. Here in Beverly it's not too bad. Personal finance? We did lose biz radio when 1060 went to Catholic radio
though there still is AM 1120 WBNW
http://www.moneymattersboston.com/
Prov. now has TWO biz radio stations with 550 and 790. The idea for Clear Channel is to get their
poli talk shows on and who knows how much money they make with it. Not interested in biz/
finance radio personally but some may like it. RKO has Lunch Money, too

Who knows if they had to pay money to win the award or not.

Who's the audience going to be for that? The unemployed, coupon traders, etc?

Little known fact...

The only reason Katz won an AP award is because he applied for it.

They send out applications to all the stations and the stations submit tapes. Katz submitted, the other didn't. You're telling me he won in his first year which was an election year where he had NOTHING to offer? Jim and Marg and Tom And Todd out performed him hands down

Katz is bad but when you compare him to the new neutered Michale Graham, is he really that bad? I know that they don't share the same time slot but they both are tasked with "local" news and while yes they both think everything they say is comic gold at least Katz brings more to the table then two hours of "should I bring my kid to work" talk. Really, at the end of the day 1200 should just air syndicated shows from there parent company and 96.9 should let Graham and Severin talk about what they actually want to talk about and not "local issues". I would listen to both stations a lot more! As the Boston market is now I have been force to go to a I-phone and Internet radio!

that means absolutely nothing !!!!!! they had to apply and then pay for the award if they won it - I know that info for a fact from people I know that have or have worked for AP in the past .....THAT'S A JOKE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Talk 1200 will pay for an award to think they are getting good pub.....no one knows or cares that Katz got it !

Now Talk 1200 is running a commericial with the tag "That's what Jeff Katz's said"....ha ha ha - another waste of $$$ by Clearchannel.....no one knows or cares what Katz's says...

There must be dozens of regular commercials out there with people getting into or out of an elevator, or riding in one. Nothing stands out there. And the content is really dumb. That said, where will CCU place these spots? Run-of-schedule on Comcast? Or will they specify right-wing shows on the Fox Right-Wing Propaganda Network, plus WWE grappling and octagonal-steel-cage-human-****-fighting, where they'd reach the intelligence level who'd find Jeff Katz listenable?

If they really wanted to make a statement, they'd set the people not in an elevator, but in a deserted forest with a tree falling...

Maybe CC wastes money but they're probably making more than a bit of it back with Kiss and Jam'n
(#1 and 2 in 6+). Small potatoes here. Ads may be lame but _comp. to WWZN_(which ran Santos
ads) they're a ratings powerhouse :)

Yes, but WWZN sounds a lot like someone's pet project. WXKS 1200 is run by the largest radio operator in the country, featuring the most-listened-to syndicated talk show in the country, and has more resources dumped into it than Air America or Rumba ever got, and yet it's the laughingstock of this radio market.

Clear Channel might be making money on Jam'n and Kiss, but that has a lot more to do with the dynamics of the market and local radio ownership (CBS/Entercom's investments in sports rights, GM's refusal to target anything other than 25-54) than it does a really good product.

Speaking as a former CC employee, I can tell you they didn't spend the time and money upgrading the 1200 signal to have a loss leader to place the Premiere programs on. The pressure is on every Market Manager to have all their stations station making money.

I have heard a few new local ads on 1200 and I really don't know how the sale was made. How do you sell a station with no listeners? But we have Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. Back when 1430 was playing the Music of Your Life type of format there was so much open inventory that the sometimes the cost per spot was so low a local advertiser just couldn't say no. I think that may be what is going on these days at the new AM 1200.

Well I'm speaking as a worst case scenario--having it be a loss leader, and "well we probably can make a bit more money with this than Spanish or True Oldies". Yes they'd like to be competitive
and while they haven't done much yet and the ratings don't quite match WRKO, WTKK, or let's not forget WBZ, they're making an effort to get more listeners. Having all syndie won't help--you need
a local show. Not just people tuning in during morning drive, but Jeff can do public appearances with
the Talk 1200 banner in the background; find even more potential listeners. Get out T shirts,
bumper stickers, etc.

>>How do you sell a station with no listeners
Throwing in AM 1200 ad airing as a bonus to advertisers buying time on their FMs? It isn't` "no
listeners", it's a small amount in ratings point and cume. And they'd like to boost it somehow.

Maybe the "real" reason no one is listening to AM 1200 is that this nation is finally sick and tired of listening to "the drugster" (Rush), Hannity and Beck and the three of them combined haven't had an original or intelligent thought in decades?? Even bullshit walks only so far before someone calls it out!!!
