For decades, KYW's famous top of the hour ID has included that phrase. But how often do you hear a Delaware story on 1060? Rarely. Once in awhile on weekends, Jeff Asche may include a UD score during his sports report. But that's it.

Then this morning I actually heard a Delaware story. The story WDEL has been airing about the Odessa home that was involved in the Underground Railroad. Nice, local story, but pure filler material. So KYW has it on now. It can be argued that not much real news happens in Delaware, but somehow WDEL and WILM manage to fill newscasts. KYW advertises that they serve Delaware, but the only way they do that is with traffic reports. They finally add a story about the state and its about a house that helped slaves escape in the early 1800's. Am I missing something here?

WHYY-FM's local newscasts probably have more Delaware stories more often than KYW, probably because of Channel 12's Delaware Tonight newscast feeding 91FM with Delaware news. My guess is KYW newsradio probably doesn't really need Delaware listeners to please their advertisers so there's not much incentive to send a reporter to the First State. If KYW was the sister station of channel 6 (which does have a Wilmington newsbureau) rather than channel 3 which doesn't there might be more Delaware coverage as it would already be available with no real extra work, as it is for WHYY.

It would be interesting to know if KYW newsradio carried the story about the 60+ broken car windows in Newark DE today as all 4 Philly TV newscasts had the story including KYW-TV.

If you know anything about radio, the news will lead local first (their market.) KYW is a Philly station and will emphasize that market. If you want news about the First State you should go to the Wilmington stations. WDEL has better local coverage than WILM, WDEL has a video newscast on their website and they have a better news staff. If you live in Delaware, you want to know what is happening there. The same applies to people in Philly and even Jersey. Always go with your local staff, they know your area better than anyone else.

The same goes for TV. Ever notice when PVI does a story on weather or traffic, they will pull over at the Crossroads Diner on Naamans just to say what it looks like in Delaware?

ID liner aside, I don't imagine Delaware is much of a priority for KYW - certainly not from an Arbitron standpoint (the TV situation is a whole different kettle of fish). In any event, if I live in Wilmington and want to know what's going on, I'll switch to a local signal...
