People Like Christmas Music - KVIL #1

Right... but how many people were really listening? I sat in an orthodontist's waiting room for an hour waiting for my son and KVIL was playing softly in the background. I wasn't listening, per se, but it was loud enough to be picked up by a PPM, should I have been wearing one.

That's why I've always thought that "listen at work" stations were the kiss of death to advertisers. No one really listens... it's just background noise.

While I'll congratulate KVIL and its staff on their success, I also have to admonish you for putting up a false headline. 6.1% hardly means "people like Christmas music". 93.9% didn't listen. It's kinda like the analogy of running from a bear. You don't have to outrun the bear; you just have to outrun the slowest person!

hahahahaha thats funny, but if im a little faster than the slowest person im gonna keep running.

its too bad KVIL does it for the ratings

Kent, I like your logic, and maybe that's more realistic when talking about ratings. For instance, applying your math to the Fan's numbers during December, the one year anniversary of their switch to sports, they've achieved body temperature. 6+ PPM's would indicate that 98.6 percent of the audience is not listening.

I'm of the opinion that ratings for all radio stations in December probably could be termed somewhat atypical. That's based on the assumption, and I suspect it may be true, that listening habits change during the holiday season not simply because some of the stations change to Christmas music but also despite the fact that they do. I also agree with the suggestion that during December much of 103.7's audience was hearing the music but paying little attention.

Once again I'll qualify my remarks as an opinion piece. Not only didn't I expect them to go unchallenged but, in fact, I welcome the input.

Where's the ratings that show how much people pay attention to radio?
I'll give you a succinct, purely subjective answer to that one: check your advertiser results. If you can prove that my reasoning is way off-base by citing the results of an objective study, I'll listen and stand corrected.

Let's just ignore the December ratings then.

Fine by me, that's what the advertisers already do... :D

My wife works for one of the ad agencies in town. And from what she says, most agencies deselect the 'holiday' book(s) when generating ratings reports, especially if buying KVIL.

They KNOW that the ratings for KVIL in Nov-Dec are atypical, and they're not about to pay (or more accurately, allow their clients to pay) inflated rates based on a ratings abberration.

Smart ad agency.

The rest of the year Lite FM is mediocre in every way. Especially if you consider it is the only soft ac in town.
